Basketball Coaching Rumor Mill Heating Up...

Wood has pretty much seamlessly replaced Dr. J (Jarrett) as AD at Old Dominion. That's a pretty impressive feat with the timing of J's retirement and the re-beginning of football at ODU. I had already graduated and lost most of my contacts with Old Dominion's athletic department when Wood came in, but ticket sales are through the roof in football and basketball still and donations continue to rise to levels never seen before. I don't know if he would be willing to move on or not, but I still don't see Blaine leaving.

I've gotten a lot of questions about the Kennesaw State job. I know that the search committee began sifting through names today for the first time. They want to narrow it down to four to eight candidates, and then to a final three. Part of the problem here is that Kennesaw is in the process of hiring a new AD as well. I'm not sure how much this will impact the MBB search. There has not been a lot of "dirt" out there on this one. I can tell you that I have heard that Greg Matta (the older brother of Ohio State head coach Thad Matta) is in the mix. He is the head coach at North Cobb Christian HS, and is a former assistant at KSU.

It sounds like Vanderbilt assistant King Rice will be the choice at Monmouth. He has been spotted at a Long Branch, NJ hotel today, and is expected to meet with AD Marilyn McNeil tomorrow. McNeil is the head of the NCAA DI Women’s Tournament Selection Committee and is expected to be back on campus tomorrow. I've heard that he could be officially introduced by Wednesday.

Nc state seems to be taking their time. I suppose Shaka is high on their list??

New batch of rumors...

- Hearing Lon Kruger to OU any truth? We had heard Lon was very happy with the pace of things at UNLV, but he may be ready for a new challenge. There is talk that UNLV HC Lon Kreuger will interview at Utah this week.

- There are rumors that UConn HC Jim Calhoun may retire at the end of the season here is a copy of his contract:

- Sounds as if Memphis HC Josh Pastner is the the leader for Oklahoma.

- Alabama HC Anthony Grant is being mentioned for the Missouri job.

- There are rumors that South Carolina HC Derrin Horn is on way out and Wichita St HC Gregg Marshall will be brought in. We think that he will make it through the this year and be on the hot seat next year.

- Marquette HC Buzz Williams will begin to negotiate a new contract while he talks with Oklahoma and other suitors.

- Sounds as if the Matt Painter to Missouri rumor has some legs. We are told the the Purdue AD does not want to pay out and the admissions standards are getting tougher at Purdue.

- Several media sites have North Carolina St looking at Texas A&M HC Mark Turgeon, Wichita St HC Gregg Marshall and Cincinnati HC Mick Cronin for the job.

- Now that Buzz Williams is out of play at Oklahoma, I've heard that BYU head coach Dave Rose is a legit contender. Rose is 159-45 during his six seasons at BYU, including 32-5 this season. I've also heard Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and Colorado’s Tad Boyle mentioned here over the past few days.

Buzz Williams has a 3.5 million dollar buyout. What the hell kind of agent allowed him to sign that?

- I said earlier that Oklahoma was going to make a run at BYU's Dave Rose - they tried today, but he has said that he's not interested. I also heard that they did have an interview today - still trying to find out who that was with.

- Matt Painter has asked for another day to think about Missouri's offer. Is he trying to get Purdue to pony up some more $$???

You gotta believe he wants to stay at Purdue more than anything since he played there so I think he's just giving the Boilers as much time as he possiably can to correct the situation.

Article on a Purdue site quotes former Coach Keady as saying that he believes that MP is trying to get more compensation for his assistants.

Keady also said that he believes that Purdue needs to be more committed to the basketball program. Not sure what that means.

Coach Keady does say as you point out that he believes that MP wants to stay.

Is the Missouri job a 'better' job than Purdue. (I hate it when people say 'a better job' but for a Purdue grad to be considering it, it makes one wonder.)

- We hear that they only thing that can derail Larry Shyatt's return to Wyoming is assistant salaries and recruiting budget.

- Word is that Missouri is reaching out to Tulsa HC Doug Wojick and Richmond HC Chris Mooney while they wait for Shaka Smart to finish his year. Northern Iowa HC Ben Jacobsen has said that he has no interest in leaving UNI. Other names would include Cincy HC Mick Cronin, Vandy HC Kevin Stallings and Wichita St Gregg Marshall.

- Sounds as if Illinois HC Bruce Webber may use this Oklahoma talk to at least get a contract extension. There are all kinds of folks talking about Illinois HC Bruce Webber going to Oklahoma.....one step ahead of the posse.

- Word is that Tyler JC (TX) assistant Tom Coverdale will join the staff at Texas Tech. He must be bringing a player because thats how BCG rolls.

- The leading candidates for the Utah job are former Alabama HC Mark Gottfried and New Jersey assistant Larry Krystkowiak.

- Word is that NC St has reached out to Cincy HC Mick Cronin if they miss on Smart or Marshall.

Why on earth is Missouri talking to Wojcik? The folks at TU are unhappy at this point.
Georgia Tech interviewed him and, for reasons that escape me, Parker Executive Search had him on the first list of names they gave Tennessee.

- I can confirm that Central Oklahoma head coach Terry Evans interviewed at Oklahoma on Tuesday. Evans played for Billy Tubbs at Oklahoma from 1989-1993.

- I've heard that new Wyoming head Larry Shyatt is considering hiring Jeremy Shyatt and Scott Duncan. Jeremy Shyatt (Larry's son) spent the last two seasons at North Florida, where he worked for one of his dad's former assistants, Matt Driscoll. Duncan was with Shyatt at UW in 1997-98 and spent the last four years at UCLA.

- Oakland head coach Greg Kampe has expressed his interest in the vacant Dayton job.

- Not sure why Oklahoma is having such a tough time hiring a coach. The hot name I heard a few times last night was former NBA head coach and Oklahoma alum Terry Stotts. Not sure where this one is headed

Good call, just read this...

Multiple sources are reporting that UNLV head coach will become the next head coach at Oklahoma. Apparently Kruger has agreed to a contract that will pay him $2M annually. Once he meets with Oklahoma President David Boren, the official announcement will be made. Kruger has been the head coach at Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV, and the Atlanta Hawks.
