Without mentioning the Wisconsin budget debate specifically, President Barack Obama said Monday that "it does no one any good when public employees are denigrated or vilified or their rights are infringed upon."
“I’m sure the President knows that most federal employees do not have collective bargaining for wages and benefits while our plan allows it for base pay. And I’m sure the President knows that the average federal worker pays twice as much for health insurance as what we are asking for in Wisconsin. At least I would hope he knows these facts.
“Furthermore, I’m sure the President knows that we have repeatedly praised the more than 300,000 government workers who come to work every day in Wisconsin.
“I’m sure that President Obama simply misunderstands the issues in Wisconsin, and isn’t acting like the union bosses in saying one thing and doing another.”
Scott Walker's response to Obama's comments
Obama says this:
Walker responds:
Here's the problem with Walker's retort:
The teacher's union has agreed to pay the contributions Walker seeks to health coverage and pension. THEY ARE GIVING HIM EXACTLY WHAT HE ASKED FOR.
The sticking point is collective bargaining rights, and that issue is directly tied to painting the unions as working at odds with the interests of the taxpayers in Wisconsin.
Walker's retort is severely misplaced, But that is intentional.
Last polls I saw say that majority of citizens of Wisconsin would now vote against him, including significant shift in Republican voters away from him. He has overplayed his hand.
Public Policy Polling: Wisconsin closely divided, but against Walker48% Back GOP Governor in Wisconsin Spat, 38% Side With Unions - Rasmussen Reports
You stick with your poll. I'll stick with this.
You wanna debate how close Rasmussen's polls are?
You really wanna go there?
Walker was elected last November and has been governor since January 3, 2011. It wasn't possible for him to have given tax cuts to corporations in 2010.
Who gave the corporate welfare away? Obviously, if you lose $140 in revenue, and suddenly have a $137 shortfall.
Hmmmmm!
again, you laid it on the new governor and were blatantly wrong - again.
Politicians have been in this vote buying game for ages and it has been predicted many times over. Let people become aware that they can vote themselves a raise and they will, forever. That's corporations, liberals, conservatives, 800 lb gorillas, real world living douchebags, behind the barn dwelling Walter Mitty and everyone else. Altruism isn't real world.
I understand the notion that collective bargaining results in higher collective pay for the union members, but that is what it is supposed to do! That is its purpose.
That is why this is an attack on the concept of unions, rather than one state trying to fix its current budget problems. I wish the Governor and his backers would just admit that so it could be debated, instead of playing this weak shell game of drifting back and forth between faux justifications.
