Beat the Ducks: Compare UT 13 vs. Stanford 12

I don't know what to expect. I do know that these stats are so out of date they can not be used to compare strengths of the teams. While the recruiting classes could lead someone who doesn't dig any deeper to assume that our talent should be superior, the truth remains that Tennessee has experienced a sever amount of attrition in those recruiting classes. We did not recruit much speed in those classes and most of the speed we did recruit is no longer with the team. Speed wins football games. Oregon has speed. We, Tennessee, do not have speed!
On the other hand, we have, for the first time in the last 3-4 years have a dramatic coach, a will conditioned team, energy, a great offensive line, a pretty good defensive line, and good line backers. However, we have unknown talent at Quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive secondary. We have very little depth at any position and we are not very fast at any position. I believe we will surprise the odds makers, and do not believe we are 25 point dogs, especially if we do not turn the ball over and can avoid injuries. Oregon is a very fast and talented team. We will find out what kind of team we have and where we need to improve. On the field coaching can be the difference and some people at ESPN say we have one of the bet on field coaches in College football. It should be a good football game and I can hardly wait to see our new VOLs.

I say lets sit back and see what happens. It helps having Thigpen on the staff being he was a coach on that Auburn D that gave Oregon so many problems. So let see maybe CBJ puts together a great scheme and our team finally shows up to a game. As far as the QB and WR goes they had a little over a month to adjust to a new scheme and staff. They will be drastically better by September they have 70+ days they will get better.

For those that were at the Oregon game, we had all of the momentum until the insane rain storm washed us out and we had to stop playing. When we came back out, the momentum was gone and the ducks pulled away. I belive if that storm hadn't happened, we would have at least kept it a lot closer than it ended up being.

The lack of depth had 100% more to do with the performance in the second half than the storm did.

Those stats don't look right to me. For example: I believe Oregon returns 7 starters on both offense and defense. Plus, given the style Oregon plays, most athletes on the three deep chart have a great deal of experience.

Typically, Oregon goes 7-9 deep on the D-line during a game. It's one of the ways they deal with the normal lopsided "time of possession" stat.

If you want to look at where Oregon has problems focus on the linebackers and kicking game.

ok Oregon has the advantage what else is new? If the players buy into Butch's philosophy it should be intresting.

I just can't understand why so many think we can beat Oregon in their house.

Maybe you should read the OP with your eyes... and mind... open this time.

Can? Yes.

Will? Much harder to say. But it isn't that hard to see that Oregon is ripe if Jones is as good of a coach as we all hope he is.

the question people have to ask themselves is if the failures of tennessee football were due entirely to derek dooley's coaching ability only (x's and o's, preparation, etc)....

or

if the failure was due to coaching and a talent problem. for me, it was dooley and a talent problem.

now, i will pick on my gators here to prove a point. keep in mind, i am as big a star gazer as you will find. but, there is a point where andre debose is no longer a 5* receiver, jeff driskel is not a 5* qb, xavier nixon is not a 5* tackle, etc, etc, etc.

eventually, they are what the results on the field say they are.

How true! We can't evaluate a team just by the number of stars of its players coming out of high school. Not to say that stars don't matter, but stars don't tell the whole story. Tennessee has had its share of 4* and 5* players who did not pan out for one reason or another. When a team (like Florida, like Alabama) has an abundance of highly ranked players, enough of them do pan out to beat the teams with mostly 3* and 4*'s.

I think it boils down to whether we can contain the speed they have on offense. That was one of our many problems last year, not enough speed in the LB & DB positions. Even with this mobile QB, we must also get some real pressure on the QB from the D line. Another weakness last year which I hope has improved. I never go into a game thinking we will lose before the game is played. Fact is, we won't know what kind of a team we have until after we play them.

Interesting view.

It's still our worst home loss in team history, and it was by a team that had traveled 2500 miles the day before the game.

With a coach that went on to lose to Kentucky for the first time since Carter was in office.
