Some will go there, some may be above that, room for all, lest you surmise wrongly, it matters not. But I have three generations of Vol grads above me, if not for West Point, I would have been 4th generation, but my sister fulfilled that legacy.
Let's look at his history. Worley's career record in 10 starts he is 5-5. Tell me of those five losses which ones the Vols had a clear shot at winning: South Carolina or Arkansas in his freshman year, he does not have that kind of stuff and in case you forget before you blast me, look at his history. Leopards do not change their spots.
Some of us have said all along that Worley had talent and potential. I don't know how it will turn out because (like the coaching staff) he still has to prove he can perform on gameday... but I'm glad some folks are coming around.
He's never lacked talent. He hasn't been surrounded by talent most of his career at UT. He's lacked confidence in his receivers and probably himself. But he's a smart guy, good decision maker, better athlete than given credit for, and can throw the ball. Contrary to popular opinion... what he appears to be right now is almost IDEAL for what Jones wants from his QB... It is what Jones appears to be recruiting in kids like Dormady.
We're impressed.
Now get behind the starter or shush. This isn't an anti-Worley thread.
Nobody said it was, and I certainly did not point to that direction, read a little closer, my posts are not inflating nor deflating Worley's abilities, they are likely spot on. And if you follow my posts, I have been consistent in saying he will lead the Vols to a minimum of six wins and a bowl. I have stated with authority he will be serviceable enough to do that job. Those that take exception with this analysis have that right of course, but his ceiling is pretty well known.
This. If Worley simply simply plays above average this is a 6-7 win team. That doesn't mean he set the world on fire, though.
If he truly had raised his game then Butch wouldn't have needed all this time to name him as the starter. UT isn't in a very good position at QB at this point...and that's OK. You work with what you've got. But people comparing him to McCarron need to get their heads examined.
He has the potential and weapons to be every bit as good as McCarron.
Worley will not have a MONSTER season, it is not in him, but he can have a good season, perhaps. And no, Worley does not win the UF game, there is a lot in that statement I understand, but probably not. Vandy? Yes, I believe that UT wins with Worley at the helm in that game, which would have led to a bowl. Dobbs runs the read option way better than Worley, witness the rushing yards by the QB when Dobbs played, Worley is not suited for read option obviously. But Worley is a gamer, knows the offense better than the others and is a survivor, hence he is the best option in 14 if he can avoid turnovers and keep the chains moving. Back to the original point though, he will not be a beast or have an SEC type breakout year for a QB, he does not have that kind of stuff and in case you forget before you blast me, look at his history. Leopards do not change their spots.
You are correct, read option is diff than zone read. My bad, does that change how Worley did in that offense last year?dude never ever keeps, never.
I'll add a 3rd. Hubbs indicated the other day that they aren't allowed to report on much of what they see in practice. At a minimum, we're getting incomplete information. We could be getting misinformation. If Jones is really, really good... then we're probably getting information managed so that it becomes "dis"information. The truth is that we have no idea how good Worley is going to be. Most of the information that we receive is vague and diluted and we try to form opinions from it. Having said that, I would like to toss out 2 things that I found interesting, yet of no real value.
1. Both Ainge and Swain raved over Worley at the beginning of camp, then promptly went silent about him for pretty much the rest of camp. Is there any meaning there?
2. Zasnow stated that Worley has looked terrible in camp. I don't know how good his evaluation skills are but the statement is troubling.
