Been a bit hard on Worley but...

Why can't you just accept the fact that Worley sucks?! And Dobbs, Peterman and Jim Bob Cooter are far superior and the coaches don't know crap when compared to the finely tuned Volnation elites that can predict his failure from 32 seconds of a practice video!

:lolabove:You're right of course... but I'm a sucker for lost causes.

I still have my Confederate battle flag with "The South Will Rise Again!" on it somewhere...

Is it possible that Worley has improved a lot and CBJ wants to keep a lid on it until the first game? Maybe to keep expectations low for the season.

Ainge and Swain are homers so they want to see him do well, but they will follow CBJ's lead.

Zas is an insider of some sort so he could be playing along.

The only evidence to support my theory is the fact that Worley finished third in the Manning Passing Academy this summer during the QB challenge.

Disappointed the Mannings didn't play along.

I'll add a 3rd. Hubbs indicated the other day that they aren't allowed to report on much of what they see in practice. At a minimum, we're getting incomplete information. We could be getting misinformation. If Jones is really, really good... then we're probably getting information managed so that it becomes "dis"information.

Great point, I referenced this in another post. Now that I've thought about it, Wes Rucker and some of the other UT media guys who got to see practices and so forth really and I mean REALLY began to pump Peterman and how well he was performing. This kind of threw me off, but I'm thinking Worley and Peterman were probably about equal in the tangibles (running, throwing, reads whatever) but Worley had more command and presence with the O and the team and with this young of a team and Butch's focus on leadership if his leadership was ahead and they were equal in all tangibles through camp thats why he got the nod.

Sjt18 would you think it's possible Butch knows he just needs one of them to literally manage the games. That after seeing how good Hurd was right away, the return of Josh Smith, Croom and his newfound physical presence in the offense, how usuable our TE's are going to be now, North not being a "one hit wonder" and the addition of Malone and Pearson are as good as advertised that he chose Worley for the locker room and huddle presence more than anything?

Yes indeed. That's what irritates me about posters arriving to conclusions based on practice videos. I mean seriously? Are these people that dense?

Butch is a master of media manipulation.

His inventive use of recruiting tactics have kept this 5-7 team a regular mention on Sports programming because of bucket hats and Rolling Stone covers.

Meanwhile he deflects relevant questions with coach speak and hammers his talking points about "no returning line starters yadda yadda yadda"

He is managing expectations because I think he knows we can be improved and still just get to 6-7 wins and he is not going to hype these guys and the fan base.

My guess is the late naming of Worley had more to do with showing a real open QB competition. He has recruits coming in based on that selling point.

Lastly it's my belief he called up the radio guys and said "shut it down"

Solid post. Welcome to the board.

I really hope Worley comes out and throws up some big numbers, but game play is a lot different than practice for some people. Worley hasn't shown me that he can translate great practice to a great game. I hope he does and maybe after another summer under Butch, it finally comes together. Also, maybe it just takes a year to get the ole Dooley system out of some people's head... Maybe he just wants to win this year. With the talent we have at WR, I think he comes out and has a big game, but the real test will come here in a few weeks against UF. Go Vols!

And all of that means what when you step on campus? Nothing!

I think you're labeling McCarron as a game manager to try to fit your argument. His Jr. & Sr. years combined he threw for 6000 yards, 58 TDs, and 10 Ints. If that's a "game manager" then I'd take one of those every year.

Worley got labeled a "game manager" last year simply because he didn't throw an Int in the UGA and S. Carolina games.

At home. There is a lot to be said about the Vols in Neyland.

One of the guys allowed access during practice slipped up and said after the announcement that the competition wasn't that close. I like NP. I like all three and think they can be effective for UT. But I don't think there was ever a whole lot of question about where it was headed. If there had been then the #1 QB reps would have been split more evenly. Worley always got the bulk of them.

Sjt18 would you think it's possible Butch knows he just needs one of them to literally manage the games.
I think that will always be requirement #1 from his QB. Jones replaced Legaux with a much less athletic QB in his last year at Cincy citing his poor management of the O. If I don't miss my guess, game management will always come first followed by getting the ball into the hands of playmakers. If a QB can add some running ability after that then its just a bonus.

I think you are underestimating Worley a little bit. He's not the "no talent" many seem to think. But again, folks are going to be disappointed if they are looking for Jones to pursue QB's that are radically different from Worley.

I think you are right.

I wouldn't say it exactly like that but pretty much agree there too. Some of his reactions to questions about expectations have been interesting... sort of like he was hiding a secret. I think his expectations may be a bit higher than that but you are correct in that he doesn't want fan disappointment or more importantly an image hit if it isn't.

Great point. You know that I made a pretty big deal of Worley getting most of the #1 reps. I still think that was a give away... not that it wasn't a real competition but only that the competition wasn't quite as close as reports made it sound.

Lastly it's my belief he called up the radio guys and said "shut it down"
You could be right. If so... that was a master stroke. Fulmer lost control of the K'ville sports media. Kiffin seemed to briefly have it but there's no way it would have lasted. Dooley pretty much set the media up as an enemy from the start. More people started listening to the negative voices like Adams. Since it was selling, more voices became negative.

Jones giving the "positive" voices info. Shutting out the negative voices will eventually give the "good guys" a significant market place advantage.... and push the negative voices out.

I'm not sure the homerism will ever reach UGA or Bama proportions... but it would be nice to have a more supportive press corps around the program.
