Ben Howland

People are concerned with Howland's recruiting? Are you serious? Howland can and has recruited circles around Pearl.
I'm all for hiring Pearl back if there is a chance, but if there is a chance for Howland I'll take him over Pearl. His recruiting and Final 4's, elite 8's, and numerous sweet 16's speak for themselves.

Don't believe me about the recruiting look at Jordan Adams and Tony Parker, both recruits that Pearl went hard after that Howland got.

Before all of the Pearlites get their panties in a wad, I'm all for bringing him back but he's not my first option it Howland is available.

After thinking about this thread, I tried to think of even who is out there coaching that most fans would even know these days and their school.
1) Duke- Coach K
2) Cuse- Boeheim
3) Louisville- Pitino
4) UK- Cal
5) KU- Self- (maybe)
6) UNC- Williams
7) Mich St- Izzo
8) Florida- Donovan (maybe)

Anyone else?

Sometimes at coach just needs a change of scenery. You simply cannot argue with Howland's success, even though he eventually got canned at UCLA. I would totally be on board with this hire.

but he is a man and over 40......but serious what does age have to do with it ? Martin is what 42 and has never made a tourney let alone took a nothing of a school SMU and has them ranked. I don't even like LB

A guy like Marshall you have confidence could come here and have long-term continued success beyond what LB would do considering his age. I guess I would hire LB before reaching on some no-name middling coach that has a little bit of potential.

I would be fine with Howland. But will UT pay up for someone with his experience? I'm worried that Hart will try the Mike Hamilton KMart approach - "lets find an up and comer new guy who will be cheap".

How expensive do you think Howland would be?

I like Howland. I think he's a fit at any school the question is how much of a salary would he want? He's got name value and that would sell tickets. Would Hart and the basketball "boosters" cut a large enough check for a coach of his caliber when football isn't quite healthy yet?

I think it depends on what other options he has. Being unemployed and recently fired I would think would help UT's cause (no buyout, etc). How many big time jobs are calling his name at the same time? I think that is the question. If UT is the only "big" school calling, it lowers the price I would think.

"Name value" and that would sell tickets? I am not sure I agree with you there.

Where is he now???
He has coached some studs- Westbrook, Love & Holiday.

All 3 players are from California.

Recruiting to UCLA is far easier than recruiting to Tennessee.

Even without having to try to get top recruits, Howland still couldn't win it all. Doubt he'd win it all at a tougher job.

Yeah... because recruiting to Tennessee is the same as recruiting to UCLA.

UCLA's location and basketball program are far superior to Tennessee.

Most of his recruits were from California anyways. Not hard to sell 5* recruits on going to UCLA when they were born in California and grew up Bruins fans.

You're hallucinating if you don't think Howland had a built in advantage recruiting at UCLA.

A huge factor regarding the possibility of Ben Howland is the fact that he has no buyout as he's not currently coaching.

Could you get him on the cheap? No. But there's no $1 million dollar buyout to hurdle and that will be a big factor. You can tell UT needs cash on hand as their nike deal came with a huge signing bonus.

And I imagine there's not going to be many jobs better than Tennessee available this spring.

Not "IF" there is a coaching change, but "When" there is a coaching change!

No! We don't get a successful college coach. Hart will NOT pay for a coach. He will go to the team that is the Cinderilla team of this season's tourney and get that coach.

Kinda like Dickey did when Tulsa made the Sweet 16 and we hired Buzz! or like Hamilton did when Martin made the NCAA at Missouri State!

We could have a top 20 team every year, even on down years, but the will to pay the coach is not there. So, we will continue to have 18, 19 or 20 win seasons and make the N.I.T.

It seems to me that Hart is wise enough to know that if he makes a change, He needs to swing big. We are used to Hamilton's pathetic hires so we are afraid everyone hires like him. I hope Hart is wise enough, anyway!

Roy Williams may get the AX soon.
