Best American Popular Music Vocalist Ever?

I know she made it on Crusse's hate list, but Mariah had possibly the best pipes on the planet at one point. Not a fan of her music or anything, but the vocal talent she had going in the late 90's was insane.

Her range was insane. Her tone quality was garbage. That's why she made my list.

If you asked who had the best range of any popular American singer, my top 2 would be Mariah and Axl.

I would put neither in a list for tone quality, though.

Best range would be Minnie Riperton.

This thread is bordering on ridiculous. I mean, Sinatra and Elvis got mentioned, which is appropraite. I also like the props being thrown out to Alison Krauss, and of course Steve Perry is legit.

But I think Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey got mentioned once each. Ridiculous. And I don't think anybody mentioned Whitney Houston. Also ridiculous. Has Smokey Robinson been mentioned? Al Green? I'm pretty sure Roy Orbison got overlooked as well, or I would have accused y'all of disliking black people. I mean, did I inadvertently skip over several pages or something?

Michael Jackson
Mariah Carey
Marvin Gaye
Whitney Houston
Smokey Robinson
Al Green
Roy Orbison

Adele and Lady Gaga will be on the list in a few years. Never mind, Adele is British.

Okay, so I did overlook a couple mentions of Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, and at least one of Smokey Robinson.

If our criteria is the best vocalist who happens to be American and making (or used to make) pop music -- and I'm reading the thread title again, and I'm pretty sure that's what it is asking for -- and you leave Mariah Carey off your top 5, then you should go back and read the criteria again.

You can dislike her all you want, but her pipes and her ability to put out #1 hits over and over again is not something that is debatable.

Whitney Houston was definitely mentioned. Only reason I didn't.

Adele's songwriting is way better than her actual voice anyway.

I like your list. I'm for real, not being a smart ass. Not a big MJ fan tho.

Not necessarily.

If you can sing 5 octaves terribly, that doesn't make you a good singer. It just means you have a wide range.
That's the list in which Mariah Carey bats lead-off.

I'd rather have someone who sounds fantastic singing 3 octaves than a person that butchers every note of a 5 octave range.

Did you know that Whitney Houston's deput LP - simply called... "Whitney Houston" - had four #1 hit singles on it. Did you know that Vol Nation?

It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves.

Since, VN, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message. Crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

Agree to disagree. I've never bought a Mariah Carey album* -- just because that isn't my style of music -- but I think her voice sounds good at every octave. The song "breakdown" is one I will throw out as being a pretty stellar vocal performance on her part.

*Though, admittedly, "always be my baby" and "all I want for christmas is you" are guilty pleasures.

The problem with her tone quality is akin to Dave Matthews' problem. Her singing sounds like a whine.
Not a fan.
Still hoping she's off'd.

It's an interpretive question that doesn't have one right answer. Whoever you enjoy listening to the most is the right answer ....for you.
