While watching the tourny for 4 days now, it got me wondering who the best coach in College Basketball. Now I know it is impossible to actually know, but who in your opinion is the best of the best?

Right now it's Calipari and Self. Both lost over 50% scoring, rebounds, and assists off the 2 best teams in the country last year. Both have returned to Sweet 16 in what are "rebuilding" years with "young" teams.

Historically - Roy, Duke Mouseman, Pitino, and Calhoun.

fwiw, I don't say this because he's the coach at Carolina, but Roy doesn't get in this discussion without another ring. I'll also add while I think Calipari is a fabulous coach, he doesn't belong in the discussion with K, Pitino, Calhoun and Izzo either.

I think there are a half dozen guys who belong in the elite category.....but, if I could hire one guy to build my program, it'd be Pitino.

Providence, Kentucky, Louisville - all were in the tank when he took over, and he led them all to the Final Four. And I have no doubt he could pack it up and do it at another school.

Coach Krzyzewski is--hands down--the best basketball coach in the country, and has been for years. I think Duke's recruiting has fallen off a little in recent years--partly if not mainly because K does want ballers who play for a year or two and then leave. His teams in recent years have not had the talent of UNC, Louisville or Kansas--but I think K almost always gets the most out of his talent. Look at this year's duke team--two skinny white kids are his second and third best players (after Henderson), one of the playing the point--and after that two or three very versatile, athletic role players.

That said, all of the star coaches--Pattino, Izzo, Calhoun (build UConn from the ground up, unlike Louisville or Kansas or UNC), Williams and a few others are outstanding coaches because they've been putting outstanding teams on the floor for many, many years--in different places, too. Wright at Villanova is an excellent coach--they remain my sleeper team in the tourney. Beilin at michigan is very good. There are numerous others.

You gotta to with some of the front runners:

Rick Pitino
John Calipari
Bill Self
Tom Izzo
Mike Krzyzewski

Some of the "other" guys on the list I'd include:

Mark Few
Matt Painter

Some of these guys yall have mentioned have not been challenged yet during this tourney. I think Coach K v. Rick Barnes was by far the most difficult matchup thus far where "coaching" came into play more than "player talent".

Some of these guys yall have mentioned have not been challenged yet during this tourney.

That's because most of those guys earned the privilege of not being challenged in the first two rounds by having excellent regular seasons.

I can agree with that, but I guess when I considered the question, I was judging off of their performance in the tournament. Overall, I think Petino has had the best season. Tournament wise, I'll stick with Coach K thus far.

In the tournament, only Wooden has a better win percentage than Krzyzewski. Williams, Pitino, and Izzo are not far behind. Actually, Donovan is right up there as well (when he makes the tourney).
