Best Current College BBall Coach

In the tournament, only Wooden has a better win percentage than Krzyzewski. Williams, Pitino, and Izzo are not far behind. Actually, Donovan is right up there as well (when he makes the tourney).

Donovan is and never will be an elite coach

I think there are a half dozen guys who belong in the elite category.....but, if I could hire one guy to build my program, it'd be Pitino.

Providence, Kentucky, Louisville - all were in the tank when he took over, and he led them all to the Final Four. And I have no doubt he could pack it up and do it at another school.

If I'm starting from scratch, Pitino would be my first phone call.

In case any Wildcats are reading this my second and third choices are Travis Ford and John Pelphrey in that order.

Definitely. Hard to bet against those guys.

I don't think Jim Boeheim is the best coach in college but he deserves to be mentioned with some of these guys.

There just isn't a hands down winner to me. I'm with JayTrain on the elite group idea. If I'm starting from scratch, I take K, but he'd have to lose some of the bad taste that Avery and Maggette left in his mouth.

Just stating facts, that Donovan has one of the best win percentages in the NCAA tourney, fwiw.

The one recruiting class that won the championships does not make him elite. They have had two straight NIT appearances since the last title. Look at Bill Self at KU, gutted by graduation and players leaving for the NBA, where is Kansas now? Memphis also?

I wonder how he would do if he really had to recruit...it may be quite unfair considering the McDonalds AAs he has signed over the years, but could he go to Memphis or Louisville and recruit as well as Pitino and Calipari have?

He built the elite level recruiting program that Duke has. I have to assume he could go there again if he wanted. Duke's woes today are because he has essentially given up on the one and done, look at me players. Avery and Maggette hurt, while McRoberts sealed it.

I have to agree with those about an elite group....there is no clear cut top coach..many thought Billy D was one a couple yrs ago..but apparantly not!

There are several catagories to compare for the top elite coaches.

1) Doing more with less. How does your team perform with less talent?
2) Player development. How do you coach and develop a team with talent?
3) Game planning. How well can you develop a game plan and also adapt during the game.
4) Player evaluation. How well you can evaluate and recruit players that fit your system.

Powerful stuff...and insightful explanations for each. I'd also add:

5) Recruiting. How well do you recruit?
6) Halftime Adjustments. How well do you make adjustments at halftime?
7) Suits. How nice are the suits you wear during games?
8) Hiring Assistants. How good are your assistants?
9) Defense. How well do your teams play defense?
10) Overall Coaching. Overall, how well do you coach?

so it's settled that Pitino is number one then? I like K, but Pitino wins #8 by such a margin that it's not close.

Right now it's Calipari and Self. Both lost over 50% scoring, rebounds, and assists off the 2 best teams in the country last year. Both have returned to Sweet 16 in what are "rebuilding" years with "young" teams.

Historically - Roy, Duke Mouseman, Pitino, and Calhoun.

calipari and self reload, which is much easier than rebuilding.
