Saw a Samsung 55" LED 120HZ smart TV on sale at Target for $799.00. Had two HDMI inputs. That's not too bad. I prefer three.

According to most experts, the human eye can't notice a difference in 1080 and 720 on 32" TVs and smaller. After that, there is a notable difference.

Samsung 51" Plasma 720P $379.99 on sale at Best Buy.

I've had a Samsung 50" Plasma in 720 for 6 years now. Still going strong. And as has been mentioned, you can't really tell the difference in 720 and 1080 except for some of the newer Blu-Ray movies. In all honesty though after watching them on a friends TV that is 1080 and mine, the difference isn't worth the extra money to me. For under 400 bucks, that's an great find.

My philosophy on something like this is if you're going to buy yourself a TV that is going to last you 10 years. Why worry about $300? I mean you're talking 10 years. Or, for that matter $500 or $600. Buy the best TV you can afford. I looked at a lot of TV's. You can tell a substantial difference between 720 and 1080. You can also tell a substantial difference between 60Hz and 120Hz. Not so much between 120Hz and 240Hz. Plasma does have the best picture but you lose that after a few years. It is also bulky and runs hot. You can't beat a 120Hz , 1080i LED right now. What's the verdict Freak? What did you buy?

Just my opinion but unless you needed one immediately I would wait a couple more weeks.

Best Buy & Walmart among others usually has TV deals around the first of September just in time for kickoff!

I'm still deciding. Too many choices and several good points in this thread.

I don't understand the attraction for smart TV's. Most people already have a Blu-ray player or some other type of streaming device and a game console.

I don't understand the attraction to blu-Ray myself. I go digital.

If content providers get their wish and kill net neutrality, you may have to rethink that if they impose fast lanes and data limits.

True

I like my vudu account. I get a shot at movies before they are out on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Whatcha got? I'd like to pick one up this week to replace an old Sony Wega which is on its last legs. It's not my main television so I'm not necessarily looking for the best, but hoping to get the most bang for my buck.

if you can hold out a few months, around the holidays
Samsung runs a 51 inch Plasma for $399

edit...see it's already posted previously
That's a good deal

I would avoid Plasma. It is a Dead technology. It would be like buying a car with a cassette tape deck. Plasma does have a 600hz refresh rate but it consists of 10 subfields. The main concern with Plasma is still Image Retention. Do you like to watch ESPN a lot. Do you know the logo in bottom right hand of the screen will burn into the screen, after hours of constant use? It doesn't happen as easily as it used to but it DOES STILL HAPPEN.
I would also avoid Vizio & or other Warehouse model TVs. They are a lower price point for a reason, usually fewer inputs, lower quality picture, etc. You get what you pay for.. Also models are made specifically for those stores, so they will sacrifice things to meet those price points.
Vizio are Frakenstein TVs. meaning they buy leftover parts from different manufactures & assemble into their footprint. Repairs are impossible, nobody works on them. They are throwaways.

I would buy a smart TV for the better picture quality, ie a better Panel & Processor internally. A Smart TV gives you a better picture because of those improved components.

My top brands, Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp.

The main question is what price point do you want to stay around & what level of picture quality are you looking for??
If looking for something cheap & don't care about the picture, Plasma is the answer.
If you want a great picture, get a 240hz Samsung or LG but you can also step back to a 120hz TV and still have a nice picture.. Just depends on how much $$ you want to spend..

I sell TVs for a living can you tell...

Can you get him a deal?

sure. It will depend on which model he likes.

certain TVs are UPP, Universally Price Protected. meaning manufactures determine price, can not be discounted. (higher end tvs)

Which Sharp model did you like, there are 3 models that are 70" 240hz & Quattron. Was it the SQ10, SQ15, or SQ17?? I like the SQ15 for the $$
