lots of good talent in East Tennessee back in the day

Maybe some of you old timers remember a kid for old Rogersville High named David Gladson. Before my time obviously, because my dad played with him. He was supposed to have been the modern day Jim Thorpe. My dad tells all kinds of stories about the feats this guy did. He was killed in a car accident at 15, but was committed to play for Florida. This little smidge of a clipping was all I could find.F2E39A71-D2AF-48D0-B20A-8A062D02E177.jpeg

I grew up in Duluth played for Duluth and Ridge before high school even though I went to Woodward. Played at Woodward early in high school before transferring to Ridge and stopped playing when I went there. I try to tell people Gwinnett football is probably the most competitive and talent rich county in the country. It’s serious from GFL all the way through high school.
Absolutely man. I remember those GFL days. We played a lot of good teams from when we were small all the way through high school.

Patrick Willis. Hands down.
I’ll never forget watching him run down the sidelines, and my brother (who was playing safety) launched his body at Willis to try to knock him out of bounds. He palmed my brothers helmet mid air and threw him back into the field of play. My jaw dropped.

Derrick Henry, Yulee, FL
Never seen anything like it. Don’t imagine I ever will.
Al Davis - Alcoa
Kevin Mays - Kingston
Chris Davis - St Pete Catholic, FSU, Tennesse Titans
Ralph Bolden - Foldton, Ga - Purdue
Chad Pennington - Webb
all were great players. Henry was on a whole other level. It was crazy

So many great ones in this thread. Quincy Prigmore and Todd Collins were two that I also remember that were great to see in person. I’ve been going to a lot of high school football games for a lot of years.
One thing that has struck me about the players listed here is the lack of mentions about Maryville, who dominated the state forever. I saw them play during the Quarrels era, and I can’t think of anyone who stood out.

Charles Morgan. Rumor was after he had a big game against Bama in maybe '80 he got upset when Majors called out the whole defense so he quit the team. Never heard of him again. Could have been really good...

Yes Charles Morgan now I remember. He was very talented and blew his whole career quitting and never played football again I don't think.

Small World discussion continued....... (sorry to the rest of the free world's

Do not remember Sandy but guys showed up from all over town for that training.

Arrived in Huntsville area in 80', moved to G'ville in 91' Was the seafood place Crawmama's?. I lived within walking distance. Top O' the River was the big one, but across the lake and did migrate from Gadsen area if memory holds. Favorite place to eat when we go back and visit.

Bearden was blessed with two really good players, but never great teams. Wayne Tipton's award preceded by 4 years I think Kent's at Bearden and played at LSU, at least one year with Pete, and Kent was one of those what I call passive talents. Reminded me of Spook Hendrix at UT. Was smooth and effortless and willing to step up and take the big shot or meet team needs, but I don't think he had a killer instinct. Very diligent and workman like.

In the small world category, the year Kent won state player of the year, another Fulton guy came in second in the voting, unheard of in the regionally biased voting of the day. Terry Russell stayed home and played freshmen ball at UT, had a difference of opinion with the coaching staff and departed. SOOOOOO. Long story short he completed his career with me at Belmont in the NAIA days and we actually were apartment mates for at least two years after bailing out of the dorms. We got along great which was a bit of a shock in that he was known for being kind of a no-nonsense guy and I was known as a non athlete, always nonsense guy.
Interesting post. I wondered what happened with Terry Russell after he left UT. But I disagree with your assessment of Kent Hollenbeck's playing style.

Benny Monroe was the coach, I went to all three of those BCBS games. I think they won something like 54 games in a row
Yup, 56 straight actually. Coach Monroe taught my driver's ed class. We used to drive him around town so he could run errands, go to the post office, etc. 😄 A good man who really cared about his players.
