I'm not trying to kick a dead horse, but I was at the Ridgeland game tonight in North Georgia and spoke to Lance Thompson who was there recruiting Vonn Bell....he disagreed with the hire and endorsed Kirby Smart and also said we should have offered him the DC job when we had the chance....it had me thinking, who is the best possible candidate out there (realistically)? Would anyone ever consider a guy like Thompson?

I personally would like to see TN go after Randy Shannon, but I'm afraid he wouldn't make a lateral move like that....I'd be interested to see everyone's short list for DC

No on Lance Thompson.

I would prefer Kevin Steele.

Wasn't steele dc for clemsux when w.v. Hung 70.
I wouldn't mind Ellis Johnson he is a hell of a dc and knows the sec well plus a good recruiter. Wouldn't suprise me if he ends up here or somewhere else in the sec

Isn't CEJ going to Auburn?

At the time, I felt it was a boneheaded move to promote a guy from the same position (LB coach) and from the same defense, over Lance. Lance had been a DC at a higher level than Sal, and in fact was hired from his DC spot (UCF) to join Saban at Bama.

Monte Kiffin raved about Lance's defensive mind and took him under his wing when he was here. Then Lance got to coach under Wilcox, who had a good resume (including beating Oregon when he was with Boise State). So, that's exposure to a lot of good defenses. It would've made sense, under the volatile circumstances, to just promote Lance, and keep a lot of defensive continuity.

Lance was right. Had he stayed, there is a very good chance he'd have saved Dooley's job.

So are you thanking him for not being here or you still wish you had dooley as HC. Who would you want

Yep. It is too bad that is the only thing you know about him.

CEJ as already mentioned is the new DC at Auburn.

Still if Lance came back as DC, I would not be upset. Just not my 1st pick.

Raheem Morris? Just because Gruden is out of the picture doesn't mean we should forget about him.

when speaking of steele everyone wants to bring up clemson hanging seventy on his defense. If you actually watched that game you would know that that defense flat out quit on him. players have to execute. I think steele would be a great hire. as far as shannon making a lateral move. Isnt he a position coach right now and not a dc.

I like that one too. Would put some sizzle back into recruiting, not to mention the X's and O's.

Randy Shannon would be the No.1 guy for me. Could really work Florida for us.

Yep, LB coach at TCU. I would love for him to be our DC.

Dooley wanted to hire Lance Thompson but Dave Hart wanted to bring in a Bama guy. So we got stuck with Sal, a linebacker coach as our DC.

I don't post on here a whole lot, but why is everyone so high on bringing back Chavis? Yes I have a lot of respect for him and his defenses at LSU have been great, but I couldn't help but watch LSU get third-and-Chavised in the final minutes of the Alabama game and have some bad flashbacks. Now granted, anyone would be an improvement over Sunseri, but I just don't think he's the way to go. Just my .02
