Butch claimed something mocked by certain VN’ers here. That he would bring the best staff in the nation to the UT. Certain of us wanted specific personnel. Certain of us even named who we wanted here. We didn’t get them. Butch brought along all his Bearcat cronies. This displeased some of us and still does to this day. I have a theory. It regards a Butch conspiracy. Had he listened to those of us who presume we know more than the coach as to who should be hired as assistant, we’d be in sad shape. Jonesy did his homework and knew a major reality hindered our return to prominence. If left uncorrected, that return would never occur. And that reality was an utter lack of staff continuity. No matter how good your players. If they must constantly shift gears, reinstall engines, and repaint the chassis, the car will always be in shop. Never ready to roll onto the racetrack. The Butch knew this. So he brought his long time together staff, men unlikely to bolt elsewhere at the slightest chance to do so. Hired people he knew. Hired people who shared his vision and stuck to it from beginning to end, fat times and thin. Hired a staff that is and has been, above all things else, a team.

===Senior QB Justin Worley===

(On staff continuity)

"It's awesome. We've kind of breezed through these first few installs and it's great to not have to relearn a bunch of new things for this new offseason. Last year, yes there was a learning curve for everybody, but having that continuity like you said is incredible to be able to build to this year from last year."

So, you typed all that BS just to say staff continuity is good?

Astute observation. No one else would have recognized that.

I'm not sure how no coaching turnover equates them to being the best staff in America. I saw some really good things last year, and I saw a few very questionable things. The jury is still out.

You miss the point, davethevol. The post is actually about continuity. It removes a major reason we remained trapped in being a bottom-feeding team.

JonGrudenAgent, as for you:

Until they have some NCs to back their claims, they're not the "best coaching staff in America". Let's face it, the goal of any coaching staff is to win. The goal of the best coaching staffs is to win championships. That's not to say we have a bad staff, but for anyone to call them the best, even Butch, is ludicrous. The ability of any coach and his staff will ultimately be reflected in the team's record. We'll see where we stand in a few short years.

I suspect he type "all that" to also point out that staff continuity is something the Vols have lacked the last several years and it showed on the field.

Good post, OP, however obvious it may have been. I gave it a like.

I'd be the first to agree with you, Weezer about the NCs. I'm not saying they actually are the best staff in America, as matter of fact in my view, they aren't my dream staff if I was in charge of things. BUT, the fact Butch kept his "team" staff in place gives our Vols a chance to focus on a single system and stay with it. Thus a chance to field a competitive team. What Worley said comes from the mouth of someone who saw firsthand and interacted with teammates who endured the hellish results of new systems in short periods of program time. I was also mocking the haters who have often bemoaned that Butch didn't go after some big name gunslinger who was for hire to the highest bidder as opposed to having any degree of loyalty. The players at least appreciate it even if certain VN'ers don't.

I agree with most of you post, however, there also needs to assistants who have a "drive" to get to new levels in their careers versus just staying in the same position for years.

I'm sold on that. I have thoughts certain ones who SEC served elsewhere and got run out of town, are motivated. I have no proof of that but still think they want to bring the Vols back as a way to rub it into the faces of those who ran them out of town previously. UT is the ideal place for them to do it. Plus if they pull it off, an eternal grateful UT will surely reward them big time. I look forward to very possibly an 8-4, 2014 season and a dynamite 2015 that puts on one heck of show at the Battle of Bristol.

Do you think I could buy back my introduction to you?

These guys separately may not be the best coaches of their positions, but they are better when together than most staffs. These guys get a lot done in less time because of chemistry and coordination.

It's like being at the office. You have guys with skills and deficiencies. The best teams cover up deficiencies and exploit many areas of strength.

Continuity ain't got jack to do with the quality of the coaches he first hired. Janzek was fired as the DC at UGA...with all that GA talent to draw from and use.

Ellis Johnson, on the other hand was a highly regarded and successful DC in the SEC...and guess what? He came available the same time CBJ was being courted by Hart. Johnson had the credentials. Janzek did not...he just had a working relationship with Butch. That's all.

I hope it all works out, but if I were a new HC trying to survive the meat grinder known as the SEC, I'm going to try and bring in the most qualified FIRST, and consider those you have previous experience with, second.

Bajakian, I can understand, because he knows the offensive system you want to run. But Janzek still worries me. Auburn snatched Johnson (and Garner, too) up and it paid big dividends for them. Butch hired his buds from the Bearcats and the jury is still out on them.

The Battle at Bristol isn't until 2016. By that time, UT should be a pretty good team.

Not like Auburn's defense isn't stacked with talent.

Tell Jack he ought to be ashamed of himself.

Get's what? The facts are that we had a 5-7 record last year. That ain't anything to shake your pom-poms about...so let's stop drinking the funky kool-aid and just hope for the best.

Nobody would of done any better in the situation he had. Our players couldn't execute, and it was so obvious. That's bad coaching before Jones.

Jones needs to keep breaking bad habits like walking on the practice field. Those habits made us 5-7, not coach Jones.
