Another difference is that the ABB was more of a democracy after Duane. LS was a dictatorship. As great as the 4 original LS guitar players were, LS would have, and did, carry on minus any one of them. LS without RVZ is not LS. Gaines was potentially going to be an all-time great guitar player though. He was only a member for one studio album.

Both great bands. Back in my teenage years I liked both bands but with a heavy lean to LS. Thirty or so years later I'm more drawn to the ABB, their music is as you put is much less "honky tonk"

The elitists downgrade Skynyrd as a band because their music is blue collar. You hit all around this point without saying it, But it is a good post, I just wanted to get to the core of the issue.

So now if you prefer Allmans over Skynyrd the you are an elitist? Only one person said LS sucks. I think they are a great southern band. Top 50? Maybe.

I checked several lists including Rolling Stone and LS is consistently around 100 or not there. ABB ranges from 25 - 50 something.

I get that people like LS and saying they aren't in the top 50 isn't an insult except to some people here apparently.

FWIW the RS list that has them at 95 is all musicians/bands. Not just rock bands.

I'll give the nod to ABB since I can't stand "Sweet Home, Alabama" and the way local classic rock stations play that and "Freebird" and "Gimme Three Steps" at least twice an hour.

It is my belief that Skynyrd has been downgraded by music elitists snobs, that look down their nose at their blue collar style. Skynyrd fans are a joke to them. That's all right though, I don't like a lot of the pretentious garbage they love. I'm not meaning to be a jerk. I have felt that way for years. I happen to love LS and ABB pretty much equally...And Prarl Jam "10" was a great album. Just because EV is a douchebag extraordinaire, doesn't change that, and never will. :)

Love Free Bird and Gimme Three Steps, But I agree with you on the trailer park national anthem.

I first saw the Allman Brothers Band in the late 60's or maybe 1970, as an opening act for B.J. Thomas at the Civic Coliseum. They did mostly instrumentals, and that was the first time that I saw 2 drummers in a band.

The twin lead between Betts and Duane was very innovative and Betts wrote some great songs to feature that style. Gotta admit that if I just want to jam to a greatest hits compilation Skynyrd gets my vote.
