Bible Topic Thread (merged)

i'm sorry, maybe it's just me but i would not like homosexuals to be able to marry. am i discriminating sure, but look it's just like that old saying "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"

Funny you should mention that. That is exactly what the pastor I have been talking about said on Donahue.

There's a lot in this thread so I'm gonna throw in the one little theological rant I'm really convicted about.

God has very, VERY little (or nothing) to do with Earth. (at least any more) I not only believe this, I must believe this. Whether it's some child being abducted, raped and murdered or some kid getting decapited by a roller coaster or some mom with a load of kids being killed in a crash I have no interest in hearing about a god where that's all part of some "plan". I hate hearing about some tragedy where X number of people die or are horribly injured but for the Y people that didn't get a scratch it was a miracle. Look man, divine intervention isn't where a couple people survive a plane crash and the rest died horribly screaming, burning and being torn asunder. A miracle is a plane with no engines somehow stopping just above the ground and being gently set down with no injuries at all. Wanna see somebody die? Find me up at Childrens where one of my nieces just died from cancer and you come bouncing up to me telling me how your child went into remission and start giving God credit. Why? Your kid's more deserving? And what about the sports people thanking God for this or that. Dude, you seriously telling me you think God has ANY interest in whether or not you make your field goal/shot/putt?

God wound this puppy up and now it's up to us to make our choices. It's also why we need to FIGHT evil. (plenty of debate to be had about what is or is not evil and how to fight it of course) God owes you squat. You've been offered salvation for the next life, you're guaranteed not one jot more.

Watch the news pretty much any time you want. Are you SURE you want to believe what you hear is all God's "will" or just what happens?

Sorry, that's my rant. I hope all of you have a safe and enjoyable 4th and remember what it's actually supposed to remind us of.

Sorry to hear about your neice. I hope you can find peace about her death. Not one of us can say for sure what God does from day to day or that we understand why God chooses one person to die over another. There are just many references, if you believe the Bible, that tell us he does know every detail that happens every day. That is no comfort I know, I lost my mom when I was in college, so i know what it is to doubt God.
God's will is not the day to day things that happen in our lives. God's will is for every man to be saved. The belief in his having his finger on all that happens if not significant to your salvation. Your belief that Jesus came and died for our sins and that we are saved because we believe this to be true, is what matters.
I am not trying to preach to you, just trying to give some comfort and let you know that I too have many doubts about this world and the things that happen in it.

Thanks for the well wishes and I hope you and yours have a great 4th also.

Oh you're all over my point. That He knows I have no doubt, I just believe he's got no hand in the outcome, good or bad. It takes the "why did God" out of the equation because God had nothing to do with it. None of it. It's contradictory to have titles like "just and merciful" when even a cursory glance at the news makes that seem silly. Trick is, those descriptions aren't for this life but the next. (IMO) There was an old Sinbad movie where the phrase "Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel." was repeated several times. I liked the idea. It is foolish at best and arrogant at worst to think for even a minute that God has some kind of special favor or protection for you and yours. What makes you (or me) special? We also agreed on the salvation part, it's there for us, the rest is just life. Good, bad, tragic, whatever, not His problem.

You weren't preaching, all sounded good to me!

There used to be a couple guys that would just laugh, and laugh, and laugh forever when the Spirit moved them. It was funny as...nevermind. No one ever interpretted that.

Kev (or whoever), one Christmas my inlaws put this home video in and it was a bunch of people in a room just laughing and some were twitchin and laughin, it totally freaked me out. I started crying, grabbed my baby and left. They wrote me a letter explaining what I had witnessed was laughter in the Spirit or vice versa, it scared me. They've also told me stories about seeing different demons, etc.

Now here's what I have to say about Pentecostals that I really really like, since I feel like I've been saying the not so great things I think about that faith... It is about speaking good over your children for example b/c you have dominion over them. There was this story of this woman that was inflicted with many demons and they were interviewing her mother and she would say "She looks like such a little devil" or "look at that mischevious look in her eyes" anyway, my father in law was explaning her mother basically spoke those demons over her own child without even knowing it. Just speaking positive in general, so that part I like b/c we've talked only positive things over the children, however it is a little frustrating when they call and if one of the kids has an ear ache they start rebuking it in the name of Jesus over the phone. And they've been kind enough to travel to different hospitals to lay hands and pray over me and my children. Another thing I love about Pentecostals is there utter and complete excitement over God. My Gramma would say it's irreverent, but I honestly think a Penetecostal service is very very similar to a traditional black service. When I was in college I went to a Sabbath keeping mixed race church and the services were always so powerful and exciting. Even moving me to tears sometimes. So I guess I've created a new little religion Sabbacostal.

Where does everybody stand on women in leadership or any other "official" positions in the Church?

I, being female, don't believe that women should have "official" positions in the church...and like RockyTopVol said according to God's word it says no...

I was looking at your avatar and just got off craigslist and I swear I saw the same table there. Am I going crazy or did I see it listed there?

What are you talking about?

The picture in your avatar. The granite topped table. There is one just like it on craigslist in the baby and kids section listed for sale. I swear it is the same picture as the one in your avatar.
