There's a lot in this thread so I'm gonna throw in the one little theological rant I'm really convicted about.
God has very, VERY little (or nothing) to do with Earth. (at least any more) I not only believe this, I must believe this. Whether it's some child being abducted, raped and murdered or some kid getting decapited by a roller coaster or some mom with a load of kids being killed in a crash I have no interest in hearing about a god where that's all part of some "plan". I hate hearing about some tragedy where X number of people die or are horribly injured but for the Y people that didn't get a scratch it was a miracle. Look man, divine intervention isn't where a couple people survive a plane crash and the rest died horribly screaming, burning and being torn asunder. A miracle is a plane with no engines somehow stopping just above the ground and being gently set down with no injuries at all. Wanna see somebody die? Find me up at Childrens where one of my nieces just died from cancer and you come bouncing up to me telling me how your child went into remission and start giving God credit. Why? Your kid's more deserving? And what about the sports people thanking God for this or that. Dude, you seriously telling me you think God has ANY interest in whether or not you make your field goal/shot/putt?
God wound this puppy up and now it's up to us to make our choices. It's also why we need to FIGHT evil. (plenty of debate to be had about what is or is not evil and how to fight it of course) God owes you squat. You've been offered salvation for the next life, you're guaranteed not one jot more.
Watch the news pretty much any time you want. Are you SURE you want to believe what you hear is all God's "will" or just what happens?
Sorry, that's my rant. I hope all of you have a safe and enjoyable 4th and remember what it's actually supposed to remind us of.
