Big10 Rumor: adding 4 including Clemson and FSU

So the Pac 12 lost 5 teams today? That's nuts

I always thought they kinda got a bad rap by is East Coasters. At times (like last year) they were a really solid conference.

Last year they had 5 teams with 10 or more wins and 6 ranked teams.

Getting East of the Mississippi media/TV exposure has long been a huge problem for the Pac12, with the time zone difference a major factor.

I've heard Va Tech and Virginia would bring in a large new TV market for the SEC. I guess that's important only if television is expected to exist more than another decade.

Paying for eyeballs. If for some reason TV doesn’t exist, that some value will carry to the next medium.

Christian McCafferey completely agrees.

And the largely mediocre level of play being the other factor.

Well I wouldn't say they are more "mediocre" than anyone else.

There hasn't been a non-SEC National Champion not named Clemson, OSU or FSU since 2005.

Think about how ridiculous that is. Programs like Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn St, Miami can't even sniff a shot at the title anymore.

And let's face it, it all falls at the feet of one man, Nick Saban. He's won 46% of the NCs since 2009. He has forced the conference to get better and still, it's pretty top heavy.

Finally, I don't yet get why Vandy and Missouri would want to leave the SEC for the Big12, if there is any truth to that report. What would be the advantage?

That was a joke. Vandy and Missouri get more money being the bottom barrel in the SEC than they would being mid tier in any other conference.

Also look at the account, it’s a known troll account. It’s not the real McMurphy

So we're headed to 3 conferences, each with, say, 24 schools. Whoopee! Absurd? Totally.

And all because the conferences are all scrambling/vying to grab the best brands and thus get the biggest TV rights package, and schools with decent brands are crassly desperate not to be left out the conference money grabs. The big question, to which some have alluded, is whether there really will be these huge TV rights payouts 10 or so years from now as the sports/entertainment market continues to be splinter across an ever increasing number of digital and broadcast platforms. There are no conferences, as they've been know traditionally and for decades, anymore. They're conferences in name only, and in reality TV TEET GROUPS.

Indeed, why not carry on with this Darwinian game? No need to stop here. Why shouldn't the top 15 or 20 football brands from across the country--say, the top 5 or 6 programs from each of the new 3 (maybe four, eventually) super-conferences---could form their own uberconference--a Champions conference of sorts, which would ensure the absolute BIGGEST rights deal.

Why share the spoils with lesser brands like Miss. State and Iowa State when OSU, bama, georgia, michigan, lsu, southern cal and 12 other brand-name schools can //consolidate into a star-studded Champions League? It gets a massive broadcast/streaming deal, and the members schools all duke it out: two divisions and a title game between the two division winners that effectively IS your national title game. You wouldn't need the fake drama of an 8/12 team playoff among teams from various conferences. It's true that TV likes the fake drama of a playoff---Can TCU beat Georgia. No, it can't--hence the fake drama--and that was only with 4 teams. (A 12-team playoff will just mean a lot more fake hype for the early games).

In the near term, before that happens, we'll see the end of conference title games. They'll be obsolete as soon as the expanded playoff arrives. There will be no need for an SEC title game when there will be at least 4 SEC teams in the new, expanded playoff. It will have zero relevance.

In sum, I see no reason why we won't see additional permutations of this money-grubbing nonsense for years to come. If everybody has taken this silliness this far, why stop?

The commercialization/greed of college football has pretty much ruined college athletics, in my opinion. It's true that the college part of "college football" got left behind a long time ago. But I never expected college athletics to get this crass and crazy stupid.

Finally, I don't yet get why Vandy and Missouri would want to leave the SEC for the Big12, if there is any truth to that report. What would be the advantage?

good post.
fyi…the post about Vandy and Mizzou was from a fake parody account.

Seems years ago before Arkansas and USCe that the SEC reached out to FSU and Miami and both declined. Now, this was before the internet (was what it is) but, I remember being told they didn’t want to get beat up week in and week out! Lol

The ACC is actually better or at least more competitive now. I remember the same thing that you did. I also remember FSU & Miami just cake walking through those teams for years. Even though never had any team favorite in ACC just hoping Clemson UNC or one of these teams would finally win one. It finally happened and both programs UM & FSU started playing down to ACC standards and not getting the same caliber of players. IMO.

Until the grant of rights that the ACC schools fall under is challenged successfully I doubt either FSU or Clemson will be changing conferences anytime soon. Personally I'm not sure I would want either in the SEC anyway and if it happens it just opens up the ACC for SEC poaching especially into the North Carolina and Virginia markets which I would be more interested in. Washington and Oregon to the Big 10 makes complete sense given USC and UCLA's move and the PAC-12's TV deal expiring. The PAC-12 is just about dead or at minimum a shell of themselves and this would further deepen the hole. Arizona, ASU and maybe Utah would easily be targets of the Big 12.
I agree with every word of this post.
Let the B1G have Clemson and FSU. Take 'em.
The North Carolina schools and Virginia are the only programs worth having (financially) in the SEC.
If we limit the Conference to 16 (too many IMO, but it is what it is) UNC and a VA school are the true prizes for TV markets. FSU and Clemson are 2nd tier comparatively.

That's why no one has left the ACC. Their Grant of Rights is a vise on the teams. Genius work by the head of the conference if they saw realignment coming and pushed tough terms to leave.

I'm betting we see stability for about 3-4 years with the new TV contracts coming in and the last round of expansion by the SEC and B1G.

Do the SEC or B1G NEED more teams? No. Why would they right now?
Good Point,
But who is going to give either the Pac12 (whatever it looks like going forward) or ACC decent TV money when they are losing TV markets sooner rather than later?

This is exactly correct about the Grant of Rights.

Unless the ACC completely dissolves, any school that leaves forfeits their TV revenue to the ACC, regardless of what conference they're in, until 2036. ====2036==== That's still 13 years and that's a boatload of money to give up to jump conferences.

The only other option is to take the ACC to court about the contract and likely lose. I assume it's similar to TX and OU, who considered fighting the contract but in the end will pay to get out of the B12.

Any school leaving is not happening unless the ACC chooses to entirely dissolve. They won't.
Under a North Carolina law, a Corporation can be DISOLVED by a vote of 50% of the "shareholders". That means 8 (there are 14 teams in the League) teams voting to dissolve ( "disband") the Corporation could potentially disband the ACC.
Could the 4 (likely) teams that could jump to another conference scrape together another 4 votes to dissolve the conference?
I wonder.

No one is going to give the ACC or PAC or B12 the kind of money the B10+ and SEC are going to get. That's why expanding the brand matters. The PAC just sat there on its Rose Bowl butt and let college football walk past it. Now they're toast.

As for the Grant of Rights, I'm not an attorney and won't claim to be. Everything I get is what I've read and that is that like the B12 squeezed TX and OU, the ACC will REALLY squeeze any school that leaves unless a bunch of schools leave. That may change, deals may happen, but many of us thought TX and OU would get out early and avoid the millions...... and it didn't happen. Based on that, and assuming the ACC GoR is similar but much longer, it's going to cost a lot for FSU or Clemson to leave.

Agreed, unless they scuttle the Conference to get out.
It could get interesting if just a couple more schools want out.

I am surprised by the articles stating FSU is exploring investment backers to help pay their exit fees in exchange for a cut of future earnings. Giant step into unknown waters. I would hate to see that lead to speculation on CFB profits. I would hate that.

Sure, I suggested earlier that if the Big 10+ got 4 and the SEC got 4 and B12 picked up a straggler or 2...... and I hate the word "collusion" because it sounds like a lawyer salivates when they hear it..... but if the SEC and Big 10+ "happen to develop an interest at the same time in several ACC schools" it could work out very well financially in future TV deals for the SEC and Big 10+ without costing the jumping schools millions.

In reality, all of this sucks. I hope we see stability for a few years because I don't see this working out well for older fans like me. I just don't see a way to stop an avalanche of money from screwing things up.

Something tells me the next SEC Shorts is going to feature ACC teams sitting around a table.

In less sensitive times, there would be an editorial cartoon on the sports page titled "The Mathematics of Collegiate Decision Making" showing the 14 ACC schools sitting in a circle around a pistol, and someone explaining that there are 8 blanks in the magazine.

This would be a major mistake and one of the dumbest moves. I hope it is only for posturing/negotiation purposes.

I think the odds of those teams going the Notre Dame route wouldn't be out of the question.
