That Tennessee wasn't a blueblood.

Number one in year two and we drank crimson tears.

Well I mean I don’t really care I just find it funny when people chime into things they have no idea the context or real info, and a lot of people did have questions about huepel but hey we’ve probably all been proven wrong.
A lot of talking heads from the networks gave their outlook, opinions, etc., but have been proven wrong. Also, a few fringe Finebaum types made comments on the internet and got exactly what they wanted......clicks on their websites and outrage from triggered Vol fans

The original start to this thread was, what was some of the negative things you was hearing about Josh huepel before he got here and believing them and then being proven wrong in the best way possible man..If you say you thought Josh Huepel was a home run hire or would get this much success this fast I’d say you’re full of crap. Nobody Expected this, this fast but it’s awesome.

Personally, I liked the hire but really had no expectations. More than anything else, I was so glad we were rid of Pruitt, and finally done with Fulmer.

Its proven fact that anytime you have an offense of the caliber we had the defense will look bad artificially. Remember Peytons Colts? People always complain about their defense being so bad but they had pro bowlers all over the place and a defensive player of the year. Bob Sanders, Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney and so on.. Math is undefeated. NO matter how good your defense is it consists of humans and they get tired.. the more snaps the spend on the field the more likely bad things happen. You can hold a team to 1 yard a play for 98 plays they break 2 plays for 70 yard TD's You went from giving up under 100 yards to nearly 250 just like that. Its the gamble you take with a fast-paced offense. execution/effort wise our defense has been fine. People were not out there being clueless and out of position. We had lots of injuries and instability in the secondary and teams took advantage of that. Even given that our record proves we held up.

For the record, our Defense played exactly one terrible game...Banksgate...
They did their part vs UGA. Only 3 times did Jawja score less than 33 points and the only teams that held them to fewer points than us were Missouri and Kentucky (both really good defenses till they played us)
We won the rest of the games.
Your argument takes a hit when you look at Indianapolis' time of possession (30:27) their Super Bowl winning season. The offense was on the field more than the defense. I don't disagree with your premise, but using Indy as an example doesn't support your argument. I've often wondered what the result would be if the Vols D gambled more, at the expense of giving up more TD's. The Vols offense would have more opportunities and put the opponents' D on the field more, wearing them down even more. Our D would be more rested toward end of the game and the opponents D would be worn down.

There's no doubt the Indy defense played much better in the 2006 season than the any of the previous seasons. They weren't very good the other seasons as another poster tried to claim

The bottom line is he has improved ppg allowed more than a TD in 2 years. That’s solid and we finished somewhere in the top 40 or so if I recall correctly. At times the D carried the O. Hopefully we will continue getting better.
If you just rolled UT-Martin's score back to an average FCS team (UT-Martin could score on almost anyone) and crank the SC game points back to their season average and we would've had the stats of a very elite defense. We would've been top10, easily.

For 11 games in the season, our defense was among the top10 in the country, but people keep thinking our defense isn't great. A lot of folks are gonna be blindsided by how good our defense is gonna be this year.

Ucf fans and national media said he couldn't recruit. They said he was abrasive. They said he was unlikeable. They said we'd never get any defensive staff that would want to play here. They said our linemen would be the size of Hyatt.

A lie you believe isn't always one you tell. If you think those statements above are truth then good for you!

emphasis added

I believe I was quite clear when I said:

The word "lie" is being thrown around a lot here. Some folks, myself included, were less than blown away by the hire, and I wondered about and questioned Heupel's ability to recruit at an SEC level.

My opinion and concerns were incorrect and ill-placed, respectively. But I in no way 'lied' about anything.

Good grief.

emphasis added

I'm not sure why you are so hell-bent on calling people liars, but as you said, if that's your thing, then good for you!

Really?! He has been here TWO years after inheriting an epic disaster thanks to previous staff and portal! There was a dramatic uptick in defense in year two and an impressive showing in recruiting defense so far. No magic wands or three wishes available two years ago.
I ndid not say that it was or wasn’t going in a positive direction. Which it is definitely moving in a grea t direction. Also have to take in consideration the amount of time they are out on field too based on how fast the offense can score. Our recruiting is going great but the defense hasn’t been elite is all I’m saying. I’ve been very pleased with it and its progress since taking over the dumpster fire. Only up from here.

I had a mildy negative reaction to Heupel's hire. I was unimpressed with his record at UCF because of the league they play in. I thought he might be unworthy of an SEC head coach position. I had a "you're gonna have to show me" attitude. I was flat out wrong then, and happy about it now.

Maybe check your post. Not many would take it as a positive post. Maybe there was more substance in your head that didn't make it to the one sentence, but it looks like the typical back handed compliment. Sorry if I misunderstood.

My initial post just stated that he cares about defense but haven’t seen an elite one yet. He’s building. Buts it’s all good everyone interprets differently. But we’re good no harm meant or done!

He cares about defense but we still haven’t seen elite defense

Which is understandable. Heupel can take what he has on offense and scheme pretty well, mask a lot of our deficiencies like he did in year one. Year two we had more depth and experience in the system and we really started clicking. It’s a little different on defense where he didn’t have a lot to work with in year one and big holes in the secondary. I think the D will be a good bit improved in the secondary this season. Looking for the DL to be solid again if not better. B Young will be missed, though.

I was worried because I didn't understand the difference between an Air Raid and Heupel's scheme.
It took me about half the season of 21 to realize Heupel's scheme is a Veer (hit the gaps wherever they open) running scheme that stretches the secondary. It is not much more than the Veer & Shoot.

Members throw some (edit - names for Heupel's offense) around occasionally, but none of them sound quite correct.

I personally liked the hire because of the job he did as OC at Mizzou...He demolished almost everybody he played then so yeah the thought of that offense at UT was an exciting thought....So glad he is our coach and I hope he stays for many years to come.

The whole "defense isn't good" talk is a mirage. Our defense in year 2, after all the transfers, etc, was great. It may not have looked great, because they were playing opposite a record-breaking #1 offense in the country, but all things considered, defense is well ahead of schedule.

Add in the new players and 3 years in, we will be very surprised at how well our defense plays this year. Our offense will still be good, but our defense this year could potentially be better. 👀
I hope you are right. And if you are, we will scare the hell out of a lot of people.

I think it is somewhat debatable as to whether or not we are a "blueblood'. We can use the fact we are 10th in all time winning% to make the case

Stole my thunder…bingo…even some pundits were saying this. When his offense is correctly scrutinized…the engine that makes the offense go is the run game. And it’s the foundation of his offense. And he schemes it quite well. Not sure I believed either way about the run game when we hired him…but I’d have to say that’s the biggest misconception people had…and some still have.
Typical laziness from overstuffed talking heads. They saw the numbers AND the association with Leach at Oklahoma and added 2+1 to get Air Raid. 😏
