Is it true that Vol fans sent moving vans to his house during his later years as coach?

Yes it is. I was in high school then and I remember my dad talking about it (he might have helped pay for it).

Battle must be 72 years old; hewas born in 1941. He should be retired now. Hope he AD's for them like he coached for us. After Dickey's players left we were no good for several years under Battle.

Battle had class and courage and that is hard thing for me to say about a Bammer. He brought Holloway in to play quarterback when Bryant would not do it. For that I will always be grateful.

Unlike most of the posters on VN, I can actually remember when Coach Battle was at UT. He was always classy and never embarrassed the university. I predict he will do fine at Bama and make the evil Crimson Toads a boatload of money.

I was at U.T. during Battle's first 2 seasons, and agree totally with your post. He was a gentleman, and represented the university well. I don't know why the program slipped, but his youth and inexperience probably contributed. He was in his late 20's , and one of Bear Bryant's former players. It seems to me that his coaching experience was just as a position coach, either tight ends or receivers under Doug Dickey.

Yep...& I know the two brothers (UT students at the time) who put the ad in the News-Sentinel! To this day they are proud purveyors!

He was the receiver coach. Col. Tom Elam said that he and Andy Holt wanted to bring Majors home in 1970 but Woodruff wanted Battle.

Battle was not a good recruiter, he was a decent game day coach (not great, but decent) but most of al Bill Battle is a gentleman and a great guy.

I actually belive he will do a good job for Bama :cray:

I have a good friend who played for Battle and believes this a good move

Astute comment!

Battle was before I started following the Vols (actually started Majors first year). From everything I've ever heard he is a decent guy, but not so much as a coach. I would wish him well if he were anywhere except Bama. However since I want them to fail so badly, I hope that can be his final gift to the Vols.

I agree. You can get a good perspective on Battle the man by watching the Color Orange. I never understood how Mal Moore kept from getting fired after all those bad coaching hires. Hit a homerun with Saban and now he's a hero.

And he would know all about how to do that. Just heard his personal net worth is north of a billion $. Yes, that's billion with a b.

Bill makes far too much money to take any football job. Besides, though a kid to me, he should be in his 70s.

Strange hire. Why would you hire a wealthy man in his 70s who had not been in athletics administration for decades? Don't understand why he'd want the job, and don't understand why bama would hire him--unless they just think he'll help generate more revenue, which is probably what they are thinking.
