Bill Battle-Alabama's Next AD

So did Cutcliffe, and yet, there's no denying where his heart rests in that rivalry. Big Orange.
I don't believe that Cutcliffe ever played football at Alabama. He is from Birmingham, however. It seems to me that he got hurt, and became a student asst. coach for Bear Bryant.

I hope Battle AD's like he coached: A couple of good years and then down the drain

This. I remember the sign outside one of the bars on Cumberland (Yosemite Sam's I think?):

"You can't win the war until you lose the Battle".

We as fan base would love the record that battle has while he was here now. his worst record was what 6-5 and we run him off, he done some real good things while he was here compared to what we have done the last 6 years.

I was at U.T. when Battle came in, and he was promoted from Dickey's staff. You are right that the program eventually went downhill, but his first 4 years were 11-1, 10-2, 10-2, and 8-4. He never had a losing season in his 7 years, and finished with a 59-22-2 record, and 4-1 in bowls.

Battle went on to be a very wealthy man in the sports licensing business. He has accomplished way more than most of us.

we would love to have them seasons now compared to our last 6 years

That was an old Neyland tactic and Battle won that game in a monsoon. At least it was a monsoon on one side of the stadium.

Not to steer this onto an actual football discussion, but the third down punt is very similar to what we saw Bray do a few times on 4th and short last year.

The logic is, you set your qb back in a deep shotgun, he can read the defense and take the snap and if something opens up you convert the down. If not you punt. By doing it on 3rd down it is less likely someone would be back to receive the punt. Plus if you had an incomplete pass you could still punt on 4th down. I'm really surprised we don't see this anymore, I guess its a reflection of offenses becoming more popular.

From what I've read, your qb used to also be your punter for just this reason. Bobby Dodd was a big proponent of teaching the punt technique, something I'm sure he got from Neyland.

I know its his first AD job but the fact we are paying 200.000 for Hart blows my mind we do love to throw around money.Shame Bama didn't want him

Yes, Battle did decline but when you look at his record and the fact that he went to 5 bowls in 7 years and, to compare it with what we have had lately - Battle's record looks pretty darn good!

1970 11-1 Sugar
1971 10-2
1972 10-2
1973 8-4
1974 8-3-2
1975 7-5
1976 6-5

60 wins, 22 Loses winning % of 63.4%

Go Vols!!

Notice the decline once his players starting coming in while Dickey's left. Also, Majors went 4-7 after replacing Alabama Bill. The guy was a complete joke.

I talked with one of Battle's former players who was a 3 year starter, and asked him what caused Battle's demise. He said that the fans wanted Majors because of his success at Pitt.

So I said "no, I mean why did the program go downhill after the first few years?" He said Bob Woodruff, the Athletic Director would not let Battle replace some coaches that he wanted to fire. He said that some of the best ones left when Dickey left, and Battle was left with some coaches who didn't produce, and who Battle wasn't allowed to fire.

Every thing that Battle wanted to do had to go through Woodruff. The player's opinion was that Battle had an extremely sharp mind, which of course he proved in his career after coaching. I know that some VN posters have been hired to do a job, but not been given enough authority to fix various problems.

I could see all of that. Battle was just too young. I know several guys that played for him and they are insanely protective of him.

Isn't Mike Hamilton available?

He has my full endorsement for this job. I hope others in VolNation would join in helping our friends in Bama get a quality AD like that.

Simply put, he's already done more for Bama football than any AD we've ever had.
