Bill introduced into Congress to force a playoff

Sometimes directly in the form of a subsidy for vaccines, but yes, almost all pharma research starts with government money into basic science. I know off the top of my head that AZT was discovered by government researchers, and it's certainly not the only drug discovered that way. The entire NIH is dedicated to funding pharma research, for example.

Uh, ok. You tend to word things kind of awkwardly.

Some...the majority comes from the private market.

And the data comes from the government because it has to.

Right. But it's still a significant sum. The most expensive studies, large Phase III trials are done late in the process, but the initial discoveries are almost always discovered by government labs. It's safe to say that without the government many compounds would never be discovered. It's simply not profitable for the private sector to look at 1000s of different formulas when they can just pick up a few the government has looked at.

Also I think it's funny that this isn't the first time the government has stepped in to reform football. Back in the early 20th century President Teddy Roosevelt called together a committee to reform the game which led to, amongst other things, the forward pass.

But back OT, I don't think this bill is going to make it. If you look at some of the ways he says stuff it's obvious he's out on a limb. He says in one breath that he's not going to grind an axe against the BCS and then goes on to call them a "cartel". Pretty extreme if you ask me...

I still say the government saying, "Here's some money to study stuff that might save lives" is a little different than them messing with network contracts, bowl sponsorships, a deal university presidents agreed to, and about 100 years of tradition. It would get screwed up and also probably include $20 million for algae research.

I believe the reason for doing that was the violence and severe injuries associated with the game at that time.

I think if there is anything, there should be a plus 1 or a 4 team playoff. Anything else is probably too much.

I think it would be the best compromise.

I just wish they'd quit acting like the BCS is the best system ever.

At this point even the BCS is admitting they have serious problems. But with all the unevenness in conferences now it'd be hard to reform without giving an advantage to decent teams in bad conferences. It'd make the game less competitive because good teams wouldn't join the same conference.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone act like that. It's criticized 24/7, even when it works out well.
I think it failed miserably in 2003. Other than that, I don't think it has ever messed up too badly.

I'm talking about the BCS people themselves. They most certainly do, and most pro-BCS in the media does as well.

The majority of college fans, no. But that's now who I was talking about.

2001. Nebraska got in after getting murdered by Colorado their last game.
The only question in 2001 was who Miami would massacre. I feel like the best team didn't get a chance in 2003. Other than that, I feel like the number 1 was there every other time. Some of the other second place teams probably weren't the best pick, but at least they didn't blow it as bad as in 2003.

Haven't seen that in nearly a decade.

I skimmed the link, but where does it say congress has introduced a bill to force a playoff?

I searched briefly, I'm not aware of any such bill that exists yet.

This thread = wasted space

This to me is the only time the bcs didn't get it right. So yes i am a bcs supporter lol.
2003 was the worst. Oklahoma was beaten to death in the conference title game. USC was ranked number 1 in both polls, and the computer polls made the human poll absolutely worthless. I'm glad the AP voted USC number 1.

And '04 with Auburn, this year... It seems about half the time at best that the BCS does what it was intended to do with little/no fuss.

Yea i understand that, but under the format that year they had such a big lead on everyone that they could afford a loss. Obviously if that happened these days they wouldn't sniff the championship.

Think it's screwed up now?

Just wait until the Government gets its hands on it.
