Bill introduced into Congress to force a playoff

For god's sake! Is it really so difficult to have a playoffs and keep the bowls at the same time?!?

I say make it a 16 team playoff system and here's how you could do it....

First you mandate a conference title game for each conference that doesn't already have one. The conference winner of each D-1 conference would get an automatic bid (12 total I think). Then you go by ranking to fill the remaining 4 spots. The teams would be seeded, just like in b-ball. You would have the top 8 seeds play the bottom 8 in the first round, top 8 gets home field advantage. Then you would take the winners of each of those games and you would pair them up in the major bowls (Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose). The winners of those bowls would then play in the "final 4" which would be held at a designated location. Or you could add a 5th major bowl like maybe the Cotton Bowl. That way they could rotate each year who would host the final 4 tournament.

The teams who don't get into the playoffs could still qualify for the other mid-level to lower tier bowls. This way bowls remain in existence and we still could have our playoff system!!

16 team playoff doesn't work because you are letting teams that have no business competing in over teams that may actually be good. And if you do no autobids, you're killing the regular season.

But isn't that the whole point? To allow the teams who are in the smaller conferences have a legitimate shot at the brass ring?? Now you say some teams who have "no business" being there would get in over "better" teams. Well what I say to that is, those teams should've won their damn conference! Besides that, you'd be looking at 11 automatic bids plus 5 at large bids, based on team ranking. I'd say for the most part the best teams ARE going to be there plus you're going to have a few "cinderella" stories which is always great PR in sports!! Will those lesser teams most likely get drilled in the first round? Sure, absolutely! However the difference is that they got their opportunity to compete in the first place!

The two teams playing for the MAC title deserve about the same shot as my high school team. If you want to do anything, do a plus 1 or 4 team playoff and be done with it right there.

Again, that mentality is why the BCS is so hated. It may not have been intended this way when it was first created, but all the BCS does is ensure that the smaller D-1 conferences never have a legitimate shot at winning a championship. I disagree with that attitude. You play the conference you're in. Teams like Central Michigan, East Carolina, and Troy cannot help the fact that they are in smaller D-1 conferences. Having said that, they won their conference championships and if there was a playoff in place the way I suggested, they should be recognized as such with a playoff berth. Will they get drilled in round 1? Yeah most likely. However at least they got their shot. If there was a playoff in place as I suggested, here is how it would've looked....

Automatic bids:

Georgia Tech
Alabama
Ohio State
Texas
Oregon
Boise State
Cincinatti
TCU
Central Michigan
East Carolina
Troy

At large bids:

Florida
Iowa
Virginia Tech
LSU
Penn State

Personally I think that is a very fair and balanced list of teams. You have all your of conference winners plus the 5 highest ranking teams for the at large bids.

Not advocating that format, but that's the norm for every other NCAA sport. There are not 64 baseball or basketball teams out there with a chance to win the title. The chance to compete is the whole point.

The intensity of every game is why college football is so popular. Add a 16 team playoff and you could definitely end up with teams taking it easy during rivalry week because the game simply doesn't matter.

Teams like Iowa literally deserve nothing. If you can't make the top 4, you probably don't deserve a shot at the national title. It's the way college football always has been and should stay, IMO.

Having the media crown the national champs seems like a half step back towards the pre-BCS system. That's some good irony.
Maybe crown was a bad chioce of words. In essence what I was saying is that so long as the BCS doesn't use the term "national championship" to promote the BCS title game, then the legislation has no legs. The media, however, can refer to the winner of the BCS title game as the national champion and there is nothing congress can do about it, unless they want to abolish the First Amendment.

:good!:I'd love that if this bill becomes a law. It would be a big middle finger to those wasting their time in something so irrelevant to what they should be doing.

If a 16 team playoff is created, it won't be long before good teams are putting in backups for rivalry games because there is no reason to risk injury. Can't wait for Alabama Auburn with backups.
