Billy Donovan to Magic . . . and back? (merged)

I think this was probably helped along because we don't want Vandy to get too ahead of us in baseball, I think Hamilton is a little jealous of what they have going here in Nashville.

Our program is more solid than Vandy's. They've had better teams the last two years but I can assure you Hamilton is not envious of anything of Vandy's.

Hamilton fired Delmonico because he wasn't getting it done, and because we are the 8/9th best team in the conference.

It will be interesting to see what Hamilton does with this hire. He did a great job with Pearl, and really got more than he could have hoped for. Does anyone have any idea if they will use a coach finding firm like they did last time? I remember there was an uproar at the cost of that service but it apparently went a long way in being able to bring CBP to UT. I'm excited about the possiblity of moving the Baseball in a more positive direction.

They won't because college baseball is nowhere near the level of its hardwood counterpart.

Absent Global Warming changing the climate in Knoxville significantly, UT will never ascend to a level much higher than what Delmonico achieved.

Interesting...Mike Hamilton does seem to be proactive when it comes to performance. This seems a far cry from the previous AD.

If "much higher" is perennial nc contender, then i'll agree...but I think that there is significant room for improvement.

How is our program more solid than Vandy's? They spent most of the year ranked number 1. We started off top 10 and didn't make the tournament. Not sure I see your reasoning.

Why is that? Lack of interest in the program?
I'll use personal experience as an example. I was a pretty good high school baseball player. I had the opportunity to play at ETSU, UT-Martin, and UTC, among others. The main reason I chose to simply go to school at UT was that I was sick and tired of playing baseball in the lousy weather we have in East Tennessee in late February and early March. However, had schools from warm climates recruited me, I might well have extended my playing days. I imagine the elite players it takes to be successful at the SEC level see the prospects of playing in the cold in much the same way.

It's one year. Do you think Vanderbilt's basketball program is more solid than Kentucky's and Duke's because they went further in the NCAA Tournament this year?

Ah No. I don't remember the stats but I thought Vandy was better than us last year as well. Their pitcher won player of the year and as I said they spent most of the year at No. 1. Whether they flop now isn't as relevant. He was saying our program was more solid. Not sure how our unranked program is more solid than the team that spent almost all year at No. 1. Call me crazy I guess. Tim Corbin seems to be a pretty good baseball coach.

I've heard similar stories like this from those in the know in college baseball. Weather in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and even South Carolina, etc. apparently allow for year round baseball that Knoxville weather cannot allow for. I've heard that the weather issue alone is enough to attract many of the better high school players to other schools.

There's a reason that Arizona State, Texas, and Miami are in contention every year.

How many trips to the College World Series have the Heels made recently?

Well, they played for the title last year. I just don't think, with the recent success of Vandy, UNC and UVA, that the weather issue should be that big of an issue. Granted, with scholarship restrictions those schools are better academically, and why not attend the "better" school if your paying for it anyway, but there is no excuse for: 1) the burned bridges with in state high school coaches and, 2) losing recruits in the Memphis and Knoxville areas. You make a great point with the weather issue. Yes, if a player had a choice and he wanted a "career" the smart bet would be a warm weather school, but with those scholarship restrictions, recruiting in-state kids can make or break your program.
