Billy Donovan to Magic . . . and back? (merged)

So, how much are we now paying unemployed coaches? Surely we've paid off Jerry Green by now. Buzz probably has some more coming his way. And now I assume Delmonico has some unfinished business. Does anyone have anymore knowledge on the contracts of these guys?

I'll use personal experience as an example. I was a pretty good high school baseball player. I had the opportunity to play at ETSU, UT-Martin, and UTC, among others. The main reason I chose to simply go to school at UT was that I was sick and tired of playing baseball in the lousy weather we have in East Tennessee in late February and early March. However, had schools from warm climates recruited me, I might well have extended my playing days. I imagine the elite players it takes to be successful at the SEC level see the prospects of playing in the cold in much the same way.

I played high school football and high school baseball, and the weather is considerably better for high school baseball then football.

You obviously never played a baseball game in Jellico or Oneida in mid February.

The weather in March can be pretty rough at times as well.

April too, for that matter.

Andy Katz is reporting that Billy Donovan now wants out of the contract he just signed with the Magic and wants to return to Florida.

I just saw on the Yanks/Sox game where Billy wants to return to Florida and the Magic are deciding whether or not they will let him out of his contract.

this brings up the question of what Tony D will do, will he stay another year or enter the draft?

Billy Donovan suddenly is bearing a striking resemblance to Bobby Cremins.

It puts Jeremy Foley in an interesting position. Wasn't his reason for not giving Spurrier any real consideration when he fired Zook essentially a kind of "He chose to leave, we're moving on" explanation? While Donovan hasn't coached a game in Orlando yet, isn't it kind of the same principle?

That's where I was going with the Cremins analogy. When Tech let Cremins come back after he left for about 15 minutes to go to SC, GT never was the same.

If this is all true, I'm sure Donovan has to know that Florida is willing to take him back otherwise it would be career suicide.

Donovan had better think this one through long and hard. If chooses to return to Gainesville, he's there for life. The boys in Commissioner Stern's league don't forgive or forget.

I can't imagine what could possibly be so objectionable about the Magic job that he wouldn't move from Gainesville to Orlando for the extra 1.5 million per.

Donovan's a moron. Not only would he be giving up a truckload of money if he returns to Florida, but he will also be returning to a team that will be mediocre at best. In addition, the possibility that he could again decide to jump to the NBA (although I agree with Hat that scenario is highly doubtful) will be used against him in the recruiting wars.

Especially since he seemed comfortable with it 3 days ago.

He could just counter with, "I only jumped to the NBA for 3 days! Just to see how it feels!"

What a weird situation. It's seemed pretty obvious for awhile that Donovan was interested in jumping to the NBA; he's got to know that his stock will never be higher than it is right now; he gets a job close to where he lives now at a significant raise....and then he suddenly changes his mind three days later and wants to go back to college? Unless he's learned something really odious about the Orlando job in the interim, this just makes no sense. He shouldn't even know enough about his new job yet to know that he misses the old one.
