Bone, McBee, Pearl scholarship players

I am glad that this is the only site with jaded posters that always know what is best. Reminds me of the joke that we marry our our sisters in Tennessee, are inbred and are stupid. I never thought it might be true before I started reading some of the posts on this site. Pearl is a better coach than all you know-it-alls put together. On other sites these players were congratulated by Vol fans. I congratulate these players for this reward they all deserved and worked so hard for. I hope this spurs them to play harder and develop their skills. Great work Pearl, Bone and McBee!!! Thanks for all the "free" work in the past.

If Pearl explained to McBee that scholarships are a year to year deal, I'm fine with it. If he promised it for the next three years, that's right up there with signing Marques Johnson and Phillip Jurick.

Agreed. The other two weren't used this year so they'll be available next. And I'm fairly confident McBee is on a year to year basis. He walked on once, he'll be fine.

Hey quick question hat. The rivals site lists several prospects from the FB team in years past as BB signees. Like Meachem, or Ainge. Were these guys really supposed to be 2sport guys?

Most really good programs rarely have all 13 spots filled. If UT doesn't have need for that scholarship anytime in the next three years, it's no big deal that McBee is using it. However, if they do need it and it's been promised, that's a huge mistake.

Meachem probably could have been a practice player. Ainge would have been of no use. There was never any real serious talk of those guys playing basketball.

We have strict standards that restrict marrying anyone closer than cousins.

Boy came home all excited, telling his Pa that he'd found the perfect girl to marry - good looking, good cook and she was a virgin. Pa said well if she ain't goodner nuff for her own kin, she ain't goodner nuff for us.

(Were a really good program imo.) I think Bruce and his staff are smarter than that.

Kind of what I figured. Just not sure why rivals would have that. Like the bball staff was actively recruiting them and got commitments from them. Do you remember a 2sport athlete in the recent past (15 yrs)?? I can't think of any? Even track, I still can't think of any?

Asumnu tried football after he had used up his basketball eligibility.

McBee was promised a scholarship after the first season. He will be on scholarship for the rest of his UT career.

We will see. Can you show me where bruce said this? If not, I'll believe that he was promised one if available.

Congrats to the three of them. Should be a lesson to all those with kids at home that hard work can pay off and dreams can come true.

As long as this is a year to year deal, I'm having a hard time seeing why its not a great thing for these guys.

I think they all deserve the scholarship and couldn't be happier for all three of them. They were all a part of the most successful basketball team in Tennessee history...

What did McBee ever do to warrant a scholarship, besides that lucky shot against KU?

I guess your brilliance outshines coach Pearl. McBee was a freshman walk on. Coach Pearl probably sees enough in him to award him a scholly. I would believe he just might know more than you.

Steven Pearl getting a scholarship is like Vanderbilt winning a BCS national championship, it should never happen.

his salary should be able to pay for steven's schooling...

no surprise at all with these 3 schollys though

There have been a few football-track guys. Leonard Scott comes to mind.

Yes, his salary could, for sure. However, Steven will be a senior, the scholarship is available and his academics are in order. In essence, he's taking a scholarship that was just sitting there and helping ensure that 13th scholarship will be available in the future due to APR.

So, does this hurt the, "we beat Kansas with 6 scholarship players," or, are we still cool on that?

You guys need to chill, btw!

I was thinking the same thing. According to this, it's not necessarily a complete free-ride:

https://my.tennessee.edu/portal/page?_pageid=34,140536&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&p_policy=HR0331

But I may be reading it wrong.

thanks for finding that. he actually attended mtsu, but his mom is a professor at utc. so i am not entirely sure of what his situation was exactly. he was not all that intelligent enough to have a hope scholarship so who knows. i will keep searching around to see if it is just an in-state deal or if that only applies to an employee's dependent children within the ut system. this was 7 or 8 years ago also, so things may have changed since then.

There's been a few of those. Jonathan Wade is the last off the top of my head. Justin Hunter will be too.
