Unless basketball is different from football, scholarships are one year deals. Football teams give out remaining schollies to walk-ons all the time.

It's not different. All athletic scholarships are one year deals.

Yes. Thank you. Your amount of scholly can change too. (I rode the bench LOL) I know guys that have gotten 25%-100% scholly money. And everywhere in between. Of course, this was @ an NAIA school, but still. Its a mini-business contract. They are definately negotiable.

I am glad that this is the only site with jaded posters that always know what is best. Reminds me of the joke that we marry our our sisters in Tennessee, are inbred and are stupid. I never thought it might be true before I started reading some of the posts on this site. Pearl is a better coach than all you know-it-alls put together. On other sites these players were congratulated by Vol fans. I congratulate these players for this reward they all deserved and worked so hard for. I hope this spurs them to play harder and develop their skills. Great work Pearl, Bone and McBee!!! Thanks for all the "free" work in the past.

Speaking of stupid, you choose to live in Alaska. A place that is dark and has crappy weather. You might as well live in Canada. Maybe we should take you for your word though. You'd know stupid when you see it. You do after all live in a state that elected Sarah Palin as governor. Therefor I can conclude that most of the state is stupid and you witness it on a daily basis. You must be a pro by now.

I think it's pretty funny all you saying that McBee doesn't deserve a scholarship.

The team, and those close to it, know McBee is the best shooter on the team. Yes, he struggled at game time but he is a freaking FRESHMAN who walked on out of a TN high school basketball program.

There was another freshman who once walked on out of a TN high school basketball program in our recent history whose name is JuJuan Smith. Smith averaged 1.9 points (in average of 8 min pg) a game his freshman year while McBee has 3.4 (in average of 13 min pg).

McBee can have the same impact Smith had, he just needs time to mature.

If the scholly could have gone to a top 50 recruit, I would have chose the top 50 recruit, but it isn't so I see no problem with it going to McBee.

McBee is much more athletic than Smith and a much stronger defender. Get real man!

LOL

This is akin to the guy who is pure at the range and carries a +1 handicap, yet shoots 79 or worse in every tournament around

I don't have a problem with McBee getting a scholly, but lets not get delusional concerning his role on the team. He is NEVER going to be starter and most likely will be number 10 in a nine man rotation

Isn't there a way around giving a scholarship to his son? Seems like it should just be part of his contract that his kids get free admission to the school. He could just be on the team officially as a walk-on. Or is that very illegal in the NCAA's eyes?

I'm not sure his son received a scholarship As a UT employee, you receive a 50% discount and with the HOPE scholarship, his education would be paid for. All the accounts I have seen indicated that Bone and McBee received a scholarship, not Pearl.

This was my thought also,, scholarships do not have to be a free ride... books, or room, or room and board might also be a scholarship. Since Pearl may get free tuition anyway, maybe he just broke up the equal of one full ride between the three.
