Breaking: Ricky Gibson to the portal

Somebody explain this to me like I am 8 years old? Starting SEC corners leaving makes no sense...

His representatives are getting better offers from other schools than what he agreed to with Tennessee after the season. This is a constant process going on in the college athletics world we now live in.

Probably tried to leverage the McCoy injury for more money and now is butt hurt. But he’ll stick around all spring, have a free semester, continuing using university resources…

he won't be using athletic resources IMO. He will continue in school, under scholarship, unless he is sitting ok academically to transfer. Tennessee may continue to negotiate to retain him. OR, they may feel they have done enough.

Regardless of whether someone else wants him or not we’re having to spend more on him and having less to spend on others.

Maybe. We gave him a deal after the season. If we redo it now because he threatens to leave, how many others are going to want to redo their deals? I would bet, we don't give him more and let him walk. It gets more costly every time you "renegotiate" with one guy because others will want more.

Maurice Couch would disagree. These kids have a right to sell their talent. Perhaps UT should step up and meet his demands. CB is a position of need. Let’s keep him here. Pay him.
It can be both though. Players can deserve more compensation, but college football can be worse for it. Don't know if anything would be different, but the entire system may have needed someone with some leadership skills to be proactive with it several years back.

Translation = Rickey Gibson is giving the Vols time to find more NIL money. It worked out pretty well for Mike Matthews. I imagine it will for Rickey as well. He sees the team need and knows his worth. Can't say I blame him.
In hindsight, I don't believe it was all about money for Matthews. He wanted some other assurances.

What if we could use the money he's demanding to get a better player? Not saying we will, but we have no idea what's going on. No choice but to let it play out.

For all we know, the coaches are talking about rolling with McCoy and Carter and CB with Jourdan Thomas and Jakobe Thomas at S. We have no idea.
