Breaking: Ricky Gibson to the portal

Timing makes perfect sense. McCoy is down and there won’t be many great young corners in the portal. Anyone with money will throw major dollars at him. Bs maneuver but it’s where we are now days
What you will see is other corners out there who believe they are just as good will call TN and ask how much to Portal to you. It's Dominos out there. But yes Ricky shaking the Tree see what falls. In CHRIST Alone

Time to take the names and numbers off the jerseys, and replace them with QR codes.

It'll make portal scouting easier for AI, and protect fans from making any emotional investment in the players as team members.

----------------
I think time will show, in terms of maturation, that the current portal system is just as destructive to young men's character development as it is to fanbase commitment.

In 30 years, the "obscure word of the day" for some trivia site will be permanence.

Ricky Gibson is a solid player, but he is originally a 3 star recruit that we poured resources into and carved out an opportunity for him to play for a CFP quality team. If he doesn't value what this staff has done for him then good riddance!

There is a line of thinking in the NFL to not break things off when they are good. There is no guarentee you will have success in another coach's system and in a different environment. Some guys in the NFL will chase the highest dollar once they are elligible to hit the market for the first time in free agency, but then fade into oblivion. They were good players, but didn't fit in well at their next stop. I think the same with college. Alot of guys trying to chase more money, but not considering the other factors. Here at UT, you are the starting CB for an SEC team that won 10 games and played in the CFP. You have a great opportunity to make your case to be drafted in the NFL. Chasing a few more dollars may negate you from that opportunity. And with being paid more, comes more expectations, and you have to do that in a new system. So is that really the route you want to go?

Bye bye. This all about me mentality flies in the face of team concepts in sports. There is a right way to do things and this isn’t it. I’m all for players getting paid but renegotiating every year is B.S.
Like I said, get used to it. It’s how it’s going to be until they can get it to employee contracts. That’s the only way I can see to stop the indiscriminate movement.

This is just more of the same these days. Coaches have to continue to recruit players on their rosters. Coaching in today’s world has to be mind boggling. I’d like to be a fly on the wall when the coaching staff tells CJH that someone like Ricky is entering the portal. They have invested so much coaching and time into making him the player that he is. I guess it’s the way of college football, but it’s got to leave a bad taste in CJH mouth and the coaching staff’s mouths. Go Vols.

Somebody explain this to me like I am 8 years old? Starting SEC corners leaving makes no sense...
You guys have got to upgrade to Fan v2.0 ... they are usually looking for a bigger paycheck. I don't like it when our starters leave ... BUT, these young men have a gift that has a market value. Nothing wrong with being paid the maximum market value. Hopefully, we can match.

Now I understand why college coaches are retiring early
Exactly why Saban left he saw the writing on the wall. Paying illegally was a lot cheaper and gave coaches more control. As a fan I hate this and gradually getting my psyche ready to slowly move away from following this sport with a passion. The greed is sucking the life out of the game. It started with HCs bidding war contracts. I'll get more than the top HC or I'll leave etc... written in contracts. You will start to hear that with position players I want to be the highest paid QB in college or I'm in the portal.

I'll be honest - I no longer care about recruiting 'commitments', portal 'additions', rankings of either, or anything else other than the roster going into week one. I don't begrudge the kids for doing what they feel is right for themselves, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let it bother me even a little over the day to day stuff with regard to the comings and goings of 18-20 year olds.

Whoever is on the roster when week one commences - that's who I'll concern myself with and support.

Same. I’m at the point where I think I’ll just skip the offseason roster drama and check in and catch up when fall camp starts.

I'm sure some team reached out to him. Paying players is one thing but they have to do something about the tampering from other teams.
You can't. It's mostly happening via other players and agents. These guys have agents now that tend to represent players at many schools. They have friends at other schools etc etc. The box is open now. The actual coaches/staff can just be hands-off and keep plausible deniability. If I'm an opponent I don't even need to sign your guy... getting him riled up and in the portal is a win for me riling up your locker room and forcing renegotiations.

The question is has the kid himself said anything?

1 Timothy 6:10
🤙🏼
Great passage of scripture. In context Paul is talking about those in the Church who peddle the Gospel for making money only willing to change doctrine and sell error. Happens every day in Christdome Ministers Pastors ect tickle the ears of hearers making bank writing books ect. Love of Money has its tentacles in every form of business out there and now College Players getting there Turn as coaches have for many years. Nice Post. In CHRIST Alone

Maybe. We gave him a deal after the season. If we redo it now because he threatens to leave, how many others are going to want to redo their deals? I would bet, we don't give him more and let him walk. It gets more costly every time you "renegotiate" with one guy because others will want more.
This 100% let him kick rocks. It sucks but you have to set a precedent. Plus our secondary cupboard isn't bare.

That’s why you’re seeing a lot of old line coaches hanging it up. They just don’t want to deal with this crazy new world. Adapt or get left behind.
