Breaking: Ricky Gibson to the portal

Why are you defending Gibson so much?
Because the heat is undeserved, IMO. It's not a great look but it's a very shrewd business move.

We have two guys trying to fix this country who don't always give the best look in business but make extremely shrewd and usually correct moves for themselves.

I'm unsure why people don't get that Gibson's move, while not pretty, is pretty dang cunning.

If Garner got a better offer after that first raise, why shouldn't he be able to ask UT to match it?

Compensation of employees is based on the market wage and value of that employee to the business, not on when you last got a pay raise.

If the market value goes up a week after your raise and you're extremely valuable to the company, you have every right ask for another raise and you have a responsibility to your family to do the best thing for them.

Which comes first: how well your family does or how well your employer does?
Sure you can do that as long as you’re okay with torching the bridge on the way out. I don’t blame players for chasing the money before this NIL bubble bursts

What's true in athletics, especially coaching, is if you're good, somebody will hire you no matter what acts you've committed, public disgrace you caused at your last job, etc.

We've seen it again and again and again with coaches. There simply are no burnt bridges if you're talented.

And Bobby Petrino says Hi from Arkansas.

Coaches and players are a little different. Coaches don’t have a set number years of eligibility to coach. They can go away, rehab, and come back. They also have buyouts if they leave. Rickey has 3 years of eligibility left max. I don’t blame him for chasing as much money as he can during his short window and I wouldn’t blame UT if they told him to get lost after he reneged on the deal

I'm fine with whatever Coach Heupel decides, but I also expect, even if they let Gibson walk, this to occur again with guys who have leverage.

Whenever agents get involved, expect hardball to be played. It is what it is.

Still doesn't make it not a douche bag move. You're picking a weird hill to die on.

Douche move to someone with an invested interest on the other side. A neutral observer looks at it as a smart business move. Gibson's family probably looks at it as necessary. Fans and UT's staff are the ones who think this is a bad move because it puts Tennessee football in a bad position.

We're just looking this objectively rather than being an interested party.

Lots of crap in business is douche bag moves.

Some of the best businessmen are certified a$$h0les with the best strongarm tactics.

The bigger the money, the bigger the jerks you have to deal with and the sharper the knives waiting for your back.

It's definitely a douche move but it's a very well timed, probably effective douche move which means we'll probably see it again.

Using the injury to McCoy, if that's all Gibson has is a very gutsy douche move. If he's got an offer to back up hitting the portal, it's an extremely well played douche move.

It's an awful symptom of how broken college athletics is now and how professional agents (we've all seen Jimmy Sexton get coaches PAID) are ruthless, especially when there are no guardrails like a collective bargaining agreement in place.

You. Aren't. A. Real. Fan.

You're an admitted troll. GTFO

If by real fan you mean biased against the players then sure I'm not that type of fan. I root for the players and then the program. If caring about the players and their families wellbeing more than the program makes me not a real fan then so be it. I guess I'm a real bad person for caring about humans over an institution.

It is a TEAM sport. The ONLY opportunities that come to the players are because of the TEAM.

You're not a fan. You're a groupie... you're a 14 year old girl hoping the star QB will glance in your direction and smile.

I don't go to games nor do I interact with athletes so this groupie comparison you made makes no sense. I just don't go out of my way to see the players are replaceable cogs in a machine. I respect them as individual humans and will always root for their well-being over an institution which has no feelings or emotions.

But go ahead and prioritize the well-being of the company over the employees.

This is just a silly statement, specifically the players then the program part. It is all just virtue signal language that doesn't mean anything.

If you truly root for the players and their family's before the program then you wouldn't have any issue if the university went into debt to give each starter and extra $1 million just because. This is also the type of logic that would be just fine with ticket prices going up so little Johnny's dad can't take him to a game anymore but at least all the starters get a new car.

If you are friends or family of a specific player of course you should root for them first, otherwise you should root for the school and hope that playing for that school gives each of those players a good opportunity.

So then is Tennessee immoral or unethical everytime they recruit over a kid?

You see this is the problem. If the player decides to look out for their best interest you'll say they're behaving unethically. But you'll conveniently ignore all the times the program does what is in it's best interest and move on to a better player. I'm just being fair both ways. I'm not gonna pout for a player if the program decides to replace them with someone better just as I'm not gonna talk bad about a player if he decides to take a better opportunity elsewhere. At the end of the day this is a business and I'm gonna be fair to both parties equally rather than being biased toward the team because I happen to be a fan.
"You're only looking at this one way because of your fandom." No, I'm not. Offering a kid a scholarship and then pulling it is bad, too.

Let’s say we meet him at a # that he wants and he comes back. I think there’s only one way this goes where he is favorably looked upon going forward. It’s really simple. He has to ball the F##K out. That’s it. If he doesn’t, it will be ugly. Not saying that I agree with it, but people will be harsh. If he gets hit on another back shoulder by Ryan Williams it’s not gonna be good. Is that fair ? No. But this is the situation he and his group have created for himself . So if he ups his deal by playing these games he better come to play.

Isn't the "portal" closed for now? This is from Sporting News: There will also be a 10-day period in the spring for players to enter the portal, down by five from last offseason. That window be from Apr. 16 to Apr. 25.
By entering the portal in the spring, Gibson will not be able to transfer to another SEC school per SEC guidelines.

Realistically, we won't know what deal is made, just like we don't know what new deal Nico got after his "did he test the waters or didn't he test the waters" reports earlier.

This is just the way it is now. Like Gruden leveraged leaving OK State a couple of times for a pay bump, players are going to do it too now.

That a kid gets trashed for getting paid is nothing new since NIL came so I don't think it'll have any extra sting for Gibson than we saw with the "$2 million dollars a year wasted" comments about Nico.

I've seen it in every game thread. "They're getting paid now, we can trash them if they don't perform" and I don't disagree. Sit at ringside, expect to get some blood and sweat on you.

Guess you think the institution is operated by AI.
