It doesn't matter who you recruit if they don't stay on the team. Where does the 09 class rank now without Nuke, Bryce, Mike Edwards, James Green or Darren Myles?

Yeah, I would prefer to get the best players possible too but sometimes it's better to judge a class once you see them on the field a few years. A lot of Tennessee's problems are due to attrition and not a lack in talent. We need help with depth and on the line right now, not exactly what looks sexy to Scout or Rivals.com.

this. good post.

the type of player we recruit is what's killing us.

we have had 3 top 10 classes in the last 4 years and have the least talented team in my lifetime.

those low rated '06 and '08 classes are what is holding our team together. the top 10 classes are in shambles.

'06- Pope, Shaw, Stocker, V. Thomas, Thompson, N. Reveiz

'08- Bartholomew, Bohannon, Fowlkes, A. Johnson, Lathers, Poole, D. Thomas, Waggner, Hughes, Walls, G. Williams

I just went back and looked at the 06-09 classes. The attrition of our star talent is ridiculous.

The numbers are from guys who could still be on the team right now in '10 from those 4 classes.

5stars signed- 6
5stars still on team- 2 (Martin, Janzen)

4stars signed- 22
4stars still on team- 8

we have only kept 35% of the 4/5star talent on the team. that is absurd.

Every person that complains about Dooley recruiting 3 stars should read this post.

Name the last team that won the SEC without 4 and 5 star players.

If you knew half as much about football as you pretend to then you would know Al just won the championship with a very heavy rotation of starters and high quality minute playing back-ups that were 3 stars coming out of HS. Yeah, they had 4 stars and some 5 stars but alot of their team was made up of 3 stars.

Yeah, because there's never any attrition with 3 stars.

here's how it breaks down for 3stars from 06-09:

3stars signed- 36
3stars still on team- 23

64% of them are still on the team.

if we can get our whole signing classes up to 65% from '10-'13, we will be a whole different program regardless of what stars they are.

right now, our team is sitting at 51%. that is awful.

I seem to remember Utah taking Bama to the woodshed a few years ago with a bunch of 3-stars. Gotta have a good core of players first and foremost. I would have put Boise up there with elite SEC teams the last few years too.

Bama had to reshuffle their entire OL right before the game due to Andre Smith being declared ineligible.

And Boise would be no better in the SEC than Tennessee was last year.

Really man? Boise could have hung with any SEC team last year. Watch what they do a better VT team this year that killed us in the Chik-Fil-La.

The last time Boise played an SEC team, Georgia made them look like the football equivalent of the Bad News Bears.

I think your argument holds some water, but I don't think I'd take it that far.

Bama lost 31-17 while giving up 300+ yards in the air. It was their D that lost the game, not the loss of Smith.

But about BSU, yeah, I think they'd be another S.Car or Kentucky. It's easier to get your team up for one or two big games per season, but 7 or 8 is a different story.

I'm an all SEC guy, too, but Boise was and is legit. They probably could have done better than us last year. No reason to think they wouldn't have done better than us. They could have beaten Ole Miss who trounced us, UCLA, and at least done a little better in a bowl game against Va Tech.
