Well the next time Meachem catches a 5 yard hitch for a first down, I'll be sure to point out that it was equally as important as any TD that Bret Smith has caught. Meachem is more clutch than any WR we have in any situation. If we are throwing to a receiver other than Swain or Meachem, it is because they are extremely well covered. All those guys catch first down passes. The difference is that Swain and Meachem keep going and score TDs much more frequently than just about any WR in the country. I'll repeat this. Swain and Meachem are two of the best WRs in the entire nation. Smith not being as good as those guys doesn't mean he is bad.
i totally agree.....all three of them are valuable this year.....however, bret has gotten most of the 1st down passes which are SOOO important.....ummm...first downs keep drives alive so you can score touchdowns. with the exception of Cal, not every pass has gone for a TD. if Smith is the go to guy on 3rd down, he is just as valuable as Meach is being the go to guy in the red zone.
that's true...he is VERY SHY!!! VERY!!!but i've noticed that he has matured since he's been at UT and appears to be a little less shy!Coach Fulmer said of Bret during his show Sunday that he had 'quietly' become one of UT's most productive receivers. I laughed at the 'quietly' part because it was Bret who, for the last couple of years almost literally ran from reporters.
Bret's doing just fine, and his coaches know it....
Basically, you did "call out" Bret by saying the coaches were getting on to him about dropping passes. So I guess Swain and Meachem have never been yelled at in practice? Do me a favor. If you can, go back and look at the TD that Meachem caught against Georgia. He was wide open right? Yes he was. The reason he was wide open was because the safety and corner doubled Bret which left Meachem wide open. Is that not Meachem benefitting from Bret? What about the hustle block Bret gave Meachem against Memphis on the long TD run where Bret blocked two guys. Is that not Meachem benefitting from Bret? Bret takes the pressure off of Meachem just as Meachem takes the pressure off of Bret. Plain and simple. They all need each other, and Bret is just as good as Swain and Meachem which is evident the past two games AND by the coaching staff. You never hear them mention Meachem and Swain without mentioning Smith. During spring and fall practice you never heard Trooper or Fulmer mention only two of them. They always mentioned all three. If Bret wasn't on the same level as Meachem and Swain then they would've only said those two. By the end of the season you will see it.
Why are you harping on Smith? Since you must be critical at a time when we don't need to be, then harp on Ainge for throwing into triple coverage. Harp on the return team allowing two touchdowns in the GA game. My God, you sound like you are definitely NOT a vol fan.
The coaches did get on Bret Smith about dropping passes. His name was mentioned specifically several times this past spring. That is a fact. Me pointing that out doesn't mean I called him out. It means the coaches called him out. I simply brought it up as one indicator that Smith might not be as good as Swain and Meachem. Saying that our 3rd receiver is not as good as our 1st isn't some sort of negative criticism. Is there anyone that thinks Bo Hardegree is as good as Ainge? No. Meachem is number one. Swain is number two. Smith is number three. That's the way I see it and more importantly, the way the coaches see it. I don't see how this is so difficult to grasp.
TRUE THAT!!!!.....and again....all of them i'm sure were yelled at because of last year......BUT this is this year! And i am sure last year was a learning experience!!!!! AND I AM SOOO happy the vols (as a team) are having a great year and i hope they continue to improve.....there's a lot of improvement that still needs to be done in many other areas.....Its not difficult to grasp, but the way you worded it sounded negative. All of the receivers were criticized last year and this spring. But they all have performed well this year, Bret included. It is true that we have a number 1, 2, and 3 receiver, but you only pointed out negative things about Bret after he had two of the best games of his career. You went as far as saying that he won't be drafted, he drops passes, etc. You never said anything negative about Meachem and Swain, so I addressed that issue. Plain and simple. I respect your opinion, but assuming that Bret is not as good because he plays in the slot is just that, your opinion. Bret could just as easily play on the outside but Cut likes him in the slot. That is his role, that is HIS position, and he is excelling in it. Give credit where credit is due.
I guess being a real Vol fan to you involves being unabe to realize that there are some players on the team that are better than others. If that's the case, why not just play all our wide receivers? Throw Casey Woods in there next week against Laron Landry.
No. A real Vol realizes that it is totally counterproductive to criticize players on this board. These players practice too hard to be picked out and scrutinized by us. That's all I'm saying. And, if you criticize one, criticize them all. Like I said, they have dropped balls, thrown interceptions, thrown into receivers that were smothered by 3 opponents, missed tackles that led to big yardage, gave up on plays that led to big yardage, been too nervous to survey the field before throwing the ball. THEY ALL HAVE MADE CRITICAL MISTAKES. I don't understand why you got on here harping on Smith. These guys practice too hard for us to get on here unnecessarily and talk all of this negative talk. We should just be happy that we are winning games. I don't understand your attitude. Who cares who is better than the other? The players don't seem to care a lot about that. Let's just be proud of our Vols. This thread should have ended long ago. We don't need to be emitting negative vibes. We need to be concentrating on South Carolina. Even if Meach and Swain were better than Smith, at the end of the day, what does it matter to you? Does it put money in your pocket? Does it put food on your table? Does it get you in Heaven? Do the receivers lose sleep over your opinion? I think not. So, our opinions really don't matter a lot. Let's just say "Go Vols!" That will accomplish a lot more.
