Bruce Pearl is a better basketball coach than Kevin O'Neill

Its pretty funny that when the Mears/Pearl debate comes up, people conveniently forget that the tournament had less teams, but with the KO/Pearl debate we get "but they are lucky that the tournament expanded to 68"

since I have nothing worthwhile to add to the debate, I'll just reiterate what I posted previously, Bruce groped Erin Andrews on national TV.

that has to count for something...

Calipari isn't an elite coach. He is an amazing recruiter, I will never doubt that. But he has never been called a great tactician.

I thought winning was the point of that whole coaching thing. Are you sure you have thought your position all the way through?

Pretty sure most of Pearl's team would've been in the field of 32. Now, would any of O'Neill's teams been included in a field of 32 outside of one year.

His tenure being below average must be why Marquette put him in their Hall of Fame.

Yeah, nevermind everything that was going on at Arizona that year, too. Pearl gets Tennessee into the tournament through all of the turmoil and it's good stuff. O'Neill takes a team whose coach leaves about a week before the season starts, and which was pretty young if memory serves correct, and takes them to the tourney. Horrible coach.

So we are up to 3 good/average years.

I have never been in a Mears Pearl debate.

Kevin O'Neill is quoted today thanking whoever got the field expanded to 68.

Again, name me one time that O'Neill came into anything but a completely ****ty situation.

For most of Mears' tenure, you had to win your conference to get a bid. That would make Pearl 1 for 6.

I'm enjoying this discussion, but I'm not trying to argue too much because I simply wasn't old enough to remember O'Neill. I get the feeling that Hendersonvol didn't watch too much of O'Neill's tenure, either, because he doesn't seem to know about anything other than his record.

I watched pretty much all of it that was available. My family wasn't too happy when he was let go, and they hated Jerry Green afterward. The common sentiment seemed to be "well he is having some bad years because he got thrown into the fire, but they are playing hard and giving people some games." I would have to go back and look at the scores and schedules, but I don't remember him getting blown out very often, even with the decided lack of talent.
