I've got to review the Bruce Pearl case, but no idea how he got a 1,000-times stronger penalty than Frank Haith

Clay Travis ‏@ClayTravisBGID 46m
With every NCAA penalty it becomes clearer that Bruce Pearl got screwed more than any coach ever has by the NCAA.

Remember that Pearl also publicly corrected his lie -- about a BBQ for God's sake -- and got suspended by the SEC too. 3.5 year suspension!

Steven Pearl ‏@StevenPearl22 6m
The more I read into the findings at Miami, the worse this gets for me. 3.5 years for lying about a Barbecue and then publicly correcting..

We should talk about this some more. It's not a waste of time, and very relevant to this coming season.

Chris, you are right about the conversation. It's been had ad nauseum, and has no bearing on the coming season.

Having said that, the conversation will continue to happen because it's a popular topic with fans, both casual and passionate, whether you like it or not. My advice would be to steer clear of threads with Pearl's name in the heading. If you keep coming into them, you've really only got yourself to blame. JMO.

Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to keep it 100.

I don't get the emphasis on the "public correction" after the fact.

Pearl went into an NCAA investigation session, blatantly lied to an NCAA investigator, than later upon speaking with his assistants, who also gave statements, realized that he was busted. Only then did he come clean. You get no bonus points for that.

I like Pearl, but he lied, plain and simple. He wasn't punished for the BBQ, he was punished for the lie.

My sister-in-law was in a bad car accident a few years ago, and had a terrible brain injury. It took several years, but she's now back to her old-self.
Well, she's been a huge BP fan since the height of UT's basketball rise, and he did something incredibly cool for her last week. Her birthday was on Friday, and he called her on her cell phone while he was at the Memphis basketball event. He talked to her for about 15 minutes and told her how inspiring he found her positive attitude despite all she's been through. I can't stress enough how much this meant to her. Hearing from BP for this particular 22 year old was like if Justin Timberlake personally called some other girl the same age.
Just wanted to share that story. He really is a good dude with a good heart.

Exactly. Was it honorable to publicly admit that you weren't truthful? Sure, I guess. But what was your motive for doing so? Realization that they knew the truth before you ever opened your mouth and trying to implement damage control, or the desire to clear your conscience because it's the right thing to do?

No one is disputing that. Those tweets are disputing the punishment, which IMO, was far far too severe for the crime. Recent NCAA decisions illustrate that even further.

I think the point in mentioning the barbecue is to minimize the actual transgression he was punished for, and to trivialize the issue by making it more about something silly, a barbecue, instead of the real issue, which was lying to the governing body of your profession.

The punishment is irrelevant except to fans who want to play the comparison game. His punishment is over and done with. It can't be reversed. Was it fair in comparison to other cases? No, probably not, but it was 100% avoidable too.

With the Miami stuff, a lot of it was unsubstantiated, so I'm not sure what they found Haith liable for. Therefore, I can't speak to how suitable his sentence is.

One of the things that he was never even accused of during the NCAA investigation was lying to NCAA investigators, however.

I tend to think that Haith got off pretty light, all things considered.

@jonsol: NCAA says Haith told more than one account of Shapiro's threats... "These accounts are inconsistent and not credible."

AKA...lies.

The Pearl topic is on a lot of people's minds today after seeing the Frank Haith punishment, or lack thereof. :hi:

Did the NCAA find him liable for lying during an investigation? I'm not saying he did or did not, but saying something isn't credible is not the same thing as saying someone is lying.

None of those guys lied to the NCAA, moral of the story, don't lie to them. Tressel was done the same way for lying, actually worse.

Was he shown a picture of Shapiro and him in his house and denied knowing who or where the picture was taken?????

Easy to tell who the Bruce Pearl haters are in this thread. They sure don't try to disguise it.

And that has nothing to do with Pearl, and neither of these have anything to do with UT :hi:

If you cant see the correlation then I dont know what to tell you......All of our past coaches and players have something to do with UT.

All of us our excited about this up coming season but there is nothing going on at this minute....new practice update and we will migrate over there.

Plenty of people are contrasting the punishment to Pearl, so I disagree.

I don't understand your anger, honestly: attempting to bump every thread on the first page of the basketball forum so this falls off, instead of just ignoring it. Nobody is stopping you from discussing the upcoming season until your heart is content.

I understand your point. I guess I just don't get the level of irritation it causes you.

Anyway, as for Haith, based on what I've heard, it sounds like he got off pretty easily.
