Eye On College Basketball - CBSSports.com Ohio's D.J. Cooper said Tennessee, Baylor tried to get him to transfer

Ohio junior guard D.J. Cooper told CBSSports.com that Tennessee and Baylor contacted him after his freshman season at Ohio, trying to get him to leave Ohio.

Recruiting a player before he is released from his current program is against NCAA rules, but Cooper was contacted after his freshman season when he was the MAC Freshman of the Year and led the Bobcats to their first NCAA tournament win in 27 seasons.

Uh-oh. I almost feel bad for Bruce, he lost his job for giving some kids some free BBQ. I hope nothing comes of this for his sake. Really happy to have Cuonzo running the show now though!!

And you are 100% sure Pearl is guilty?

Read the article and you decide...

Unless you're saying cooler and his parents are flat out lying, then yes Pearl is 100% guilty. This isn't a gray area situation, he either guilty or is not, and it appears he definitely is.

Maybe the kid is just trying to get noticed. 15 minutes of fame?

He's balking out and brought a 13 seed to the sweet 16, that's all the kid needs for fame.

He isn't making this up, that'd e the dumbest thing he could do right now. Fabricate a story to try and make 2 schools/coaches look bad. Seriously?

I'm not going to participate in a Pearl pissing contest since we have done enough of that already. Pearl is gone so let it go.

So you can't handle talking about the topic at hand, your hero committing yet another violation...and therefore the rest of us can't talk about this story?

Nobody is arguing that, but don't act like this kid is making it up and that Pearl is innocent in this.

It involves Tennessee basketball, and possibly could still come back on Tennessee basketball program. Therefore, it definitely is more than deserving of discussion.

What's the timeline here? Was this before the cookout madness?

BBQ was September of 08
Recruitment of cooper summer after freshman year would be summer of 2010

Side note:
He met with NCAA about the BBQ in the summer of 2010, June and August. So while meeting about possible violations he's out recruiting a guy from a college program, smart.

It's Bruce Pearl.

I'm not surprised by anything he does.

Who cares. Won't affect us one bit. Water under the bridge

It absolutely could, I don't think it will, but it could.the self imposing penalties and NCAA penalties were under the assumption of the BBQ and bump being the violations.

If they find out that while Pearl was meeting with the NCAA about BBQ gate in the summer of '10, that he was also recruiting players illegally that may change things a bit.

Don't doubt the story, but wonder how it hasn't gotten it with all the publicity Pearl has had with the NCAA. I assume Coopers just never mentioned it, but you'd think Ohio would have reported it if Cooper told them. Scott Drew is in there too, totally believable.

That's what sold me on the story. Birds of a feather...

How Drew has never been hammered is beyond me. Dude is greasier than Cal, and that's not easy.

Once I figured the timeline I was like seriously? I really thought he'd have been smarter than that.

Glad he's gone.

The timeline means nothing. He would have made the contact well before the inquiry late in the summer not after.
