BTO’s South Carolina Postgame Report

Very true. There was a lot of give the ball to Dalton and get out of the way late. He was hitting shots so it worked, but 5 guys playing together always leads to higher quality looks.
Maybe…but DK shot about 50% while the others shot about 25%. If that’s going to be the case then DK taking tough shots is much better than others getting high quality looks.

I wouldn’t say they completely overlooked South Carolina but they definitely had one eye on Kentucky. Happens with college kids. Part of the growth and maturity of young men. Focus on the task at hand and the opponent in front of you. Missed layups, free throws, wide open shots are a clear sign of not being locked in. I expect Coach Barnes to eviscerate them today in practice and they will come out like gangbusters on Saturday.

4). Wasn’t ZZ sick? It’s been a chronic issue. Surely they’re getting flu shots and it’s just more bad luck.

Three players missed Monday practice, down with something. I think someone said “flu” in the slang sense, rather than influenza. I know everyone practiced again yesterday. That’s no excuse for twelve missed layups and dunks, bad rebounding, and abysmal free throw shooting. We better tighten back up before Saturday. UK still hasn’t found their groove on defense and their very vulnerable on bad shooting nights, but it’s very rare to lose a second one in a row at Rupp on a Saturday night.

If those three were Aidoo, Zeigler, and James, that would make sense.

A pair of 5th year seniors, a three year starter and two other upperclassmen, along with a 23 year old? This should be the most mature team in the country, I think.

There are studies that show the average male doesn’t reach fully maturity until their 40s-50s. Every team in the country has down games, emphasis on the plural form. We won’t be the last team to have a letdown.

Didn't help Aidoo got in foul trouble either. I love Awaka, but on offense he's lacking good vision with passing.

Usually if we run a high screen with Aidoo he can find the right teammate to pass to if the defense tries to double. Awaka on a few possessions would get the double and completely freeze up even when DK's man was doubling and he was closest to Awaka.

But ultimately we're better this season offensively with pace and South Carolina does everything they can on both ends to slow the game down.

Yeah, I love to see Kentucky lose, but I think I would have felt a lot better about Saturday if UK had escaped with a close win last night. Don’t want to give UK any extra motivation and they got it by being embarrassed by a bubble team in Florida on their home court last night.

It’s very rare for Kentucky to ever lose two in a row at Rupp. I think it has happened once in the last 15 years. 2021. Versus TN and then Arkansas. First to TN on a Saturday and then versus Arkansas on Tuesday.

2009 was the last time before 2021. Twice that year and both times the second loss was a mid-week game. So KY hasn’t lost a 2nd game in a row at Rupp with the 2nd loss on a Saturday since sometime before 2009.

Yes, of course. The question was for the poster who seems to think that missing those shots is on Barnes
Barnes is responsible for the team's play on the court - that's why he's the head coach. Your attempts to relinquish his responsibility are silly. He's actually been credited on numerous occasions for improving multiple players' shots. To answer your question, Barnes knows how to run practice in order to work on shooting.

Yes, I am aware of all that. Thanks anyway

Dont you think your previous posts suggest otherwise?
I think his point is that there's only so much a coach can do to affect things on a night when an entire team is having an off shooting night. That bad shooting night isn't a symptom of a bad shooting team, necessarily. We have good shooters. Knecht, Vescovi, Gainey, ZZ...even JJJ and Mashack have shown an ability to shoot the ball. Barnes can't really coach them out of a collectively bad shooting night. Now, he can make an effort to scheme plays that work the ball into the paint, but when we miss 15 layups, what more do you expect him to do? What's the secret sauce at that point?

At some point you get so specific with a stat that it becomes meaningless. When was the last time UT lost back-to-back home games with the second game occurring on a Saturday?

That was just an extension of KY rarely losing back to back home games. In the last 15 years it has only happened once and it wasn’t completed in front of a rowdy Saturday night crowd. TN will have to face that day after tomorrow.

Look at Mashack’s dramatic improvement in his jump shot as the latest in a long line of players where Barnes helped a poor shooter improve their shooting technique. Mashack has been pretty solid shooting the ball this year. Enough so that most are wondering why he’s not shooting more.

I'm not claiming to know what does and doesn't happen in practice, but I expect the staff to try to determine the causes of poor shooting and directly address them, whether that's working on schemes, drills, or reps. Given our history of multiple players missing layups throughout the years, I gotta think that ties into what goes on in practice, and I think the staff has the ability to help improve. My main gripe in this argument is acting like Barnes/staff do not impact the quality of play on the court.
