Look at Mashack’s dramatic improvement in his jump shot as the latest in a long line of players where Barnes helped a poor shooter improve their shooting technique. Mashack has been pretty solid shooting the ball this year. Enough so that most are wondering why he’s not shooting more.
I have to admit I haven't noticed a difference in mechanics, such as we saw with Punter for example. I also wasn't really looking it for it either, so TIFWIW. In any case, no doubt Mashack has improved. Last I checked, he was hovering around 40% on threes, which is awesome.

Yeah, I love to see Kentucky lose, but I think I would have felt a lot better about Saturday if UK had escaped with a close win last night. Don’t want to give UK any extra motivation and they got it by being embarrassed by a bubble team in Florida on their home court last night.
Yep. Always love UK losing, EXCEPT the game before playing the Vols. One thing about UK, they seem to score well almost every outing, but also allow their opponent to score well. Gives me more hope this time into Rupp. Last night's loss wasn't that beneficial for us

The flip side is if you can pull off a miraculous win on Saturday then you’ve basically ended Kentucky’s SEC hopes, which would be so so sweet.

Oh, I would love to see us go in there and dominate. We're older and more experienced. Not sure how they will handle our D. Mashack can easily disturb an opponents' best offensive player. Feels a little like the Saturday night game at Memphis in 2008. That was a later tip off too, with a rowdy crowd.

My main gripe in this argument is acting like Barnes/staff do not impact the quality of play on the court.
Who's really saying that, though, in any explicit terms?

I think anyone coming to his defense is simply stating that while Barnes and his staff have an obligation to train these players to become better shooters, there is no immediate cure-all for a bad shooting night. We tried going inside, going outside driving the ball, and getting to the FT line. We just couldn't hit from anywhere. And that particular performance was very out of the norm. I'm aware of our history missing a handful of layups a game, but I've never seen us miss that many in one game. We legitimately missed 15 makeable shots at the rim, including a mostly unconctested dunk by a 6-11 kid. Just a perfect storm of bad shooting from mostly everyone. Now if that continued for the next month, I would be first in line to wonder what has happened and why hasn't it been fixed. But I just don't think you can fix it in the span of 2 hours on the fly when no one is making shots.

Agree with everything here, but we can't not talk about the gross tactical error of Barnes going super small-ball when ZZ toed the FT line with 4:05 to play down 5 points, and then staying with that lineup while BJ Mack bullies Mashack on three straight possessions and scores 5 points.

We played terrible on the floor, but that was a brutal coaching move that deserves criticism of its own.
I know Mashack is a tough dude, but any other player would have gone down with the 2nd or 3rd shoulder Mack through at him. If he went down, he may have got the call, but he didn't Mack scored anyway. I know that's not Mashack style, but he needs to add that to his arsenal when he's giving up so much height and he's being bullied.

Hopefully he will be coached up on it.

KY did not have Wagner or Edwards because of injury. If they are not available Saturday that would help the cause. Either way they are horrible on defense .
Be very good to beat them , however, they are not going to win the conference. I believe Bama will because of their depth and their guard play.

Maybe…but DK shot about 50% while the others shot about 25%. If that’s going to be the case then DK taking tough shots is much better than others getting high quality looks.
Actually, that's a good point. Maybe they can at least act like they want it... lol

I agree with most of this. I appreciate the time and effort. Thank you.
After watching a replay of the game ZZ and Aidoo looked disinterested for sure. But I noticed while listening on the radio that the crowd seemed very subdued as well.
Made me think if the team was looking ahead to Kittens or underestimated SC after absolutely trouncing them last year or all the NCAA BS in national news kinda put everyone in a funk?
Tough day for Vol Nation.
Thoughts?
I think VOLS and Kitties were likely looking ahead. Plus as others said, Pat Adams got an attitude (And they were probably bracing for him, since it's par for the course for that guy) and it did seem pretty hard to shake off for several of our players.

Why would we want to raise the heat on Cal? He's not a good coach. Fire Cal and they are liable to hire a good coach.
I didn't say I wanted him fired given the clear reasons you stated...the ideal would be for Cal to sit on that hot seat while we enjoy the chaotic energy and the fan's wailing and gnashing of teeth

Barnhart screwed up when he gave Cal that lifetime contract.

He’s to blame just as much as Cal.
