Bushs Speech on Immigration

His numbers are dropping because of erosion in the conservative base - if he merely wanted to bolster the polls it would be all enforcement and no focus on guest workers and pathway to citizenship.

In short, the best way for him to shore up support would be to take the House approach. Instead, he took a much more moderate and compromise approach.

Don't forget that its not just about polls, but about future elections. Republicans do not want the democrats to monopolize the hispanic vote like they have the black vote.

Bush is sending in some National Guard (not enough to do the job right) to appease the conservative base, while also keeping open the options for citizenship and worker programs trying to maintain the hispanic voters that helped win reelection in 2004.

Of course, people will probably start whining about the cost of Bush's plan and say we don't have enough resources and we're just going to deficit hell in a handbasket. If thats really a problem, talk to congress and tell them to stop subsidizing corn farmers in Iowa, handing out corporate wellfare to airlines, and building bridges to nowhere in Alaska so that we have the finances to do the necessary things for homeland security.

Or how about that whole wasting billions and billions of dollars thing in Iraq? We could probably do a lot for homeland security with that.

Oh yes come on down! I have a 5 bedroom/5 bathroom apartment on the beach. The weather is great, the beaches are beautiful, and you can't beat the thong clad women. Actually, gas is 12 cents a gallon. It takes me almost 2 bucks to fill up my Toyota :birgits_giggle:

Don't forget about gay marriage and adoption. We haven't heard anything about that since the last election. You know they're going to bring that back. Nothing scares the crap out of the country like *gulp* gay marriage. Forget terror, Iraq and the price of gas (which will also go down)

They might even bring back the color coded terror alerts if we're really lucky.

Looks like ole W is rolling out the gay marriage stuff a little early. Things must be getting rough at the white house.

When in trouble, turn to what has worked for you before.

It's ironic that the Religious Right is being duped again....he pushes an issue he knows is DOA. But he has to win back the base and get them to turn out in November. We'll see if the RR falls for it again or they actually stand their ground. Rove can't come up with anything better so he uses scare tactics to win. Quite embarrassing for us on the Right.

It definitely looks like a transparent political move designed to keep the base interested.

The problem for Democrats is that they really don't provide much of an alternative for evangelicals. I guess their strategy is to hope they stay home on election day.

The Democrats should have one of their 501©(3)s buy up all of the time on one of the major networks on Election Day. Then they could show Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ on a continuous loop. That would cut down on evangelical turnout.

I think most of these groups have seen through Bush. After Dubai, immigration, Harriet Myers, etc. Bush has little to show for actual accomplishments other than token scraps here and there. His judges are proving to be fiscal, pro-business conservatives rather than the social ones these groups hoped for. Many are looking to either stay home or protest vote.

Then in my view they've lost their minds. There's no such thing as a protest vote. :twocents:
