I'm torn on Butch. Living about 20 miles from UNC, I have to say he did pretty well at Smurf State. Problem is the whole Blake situation. I have been tangentially involved in some of the aftermath litigation related to the fiasco that led to the NCAA investigation, so I feel comfortable saying that there truly is no indication Butch did anything wrong.
BUT, my concern is that Butch is very hands off when it comes to his assistants. He lets them do their thing without a lot of oversight. That's the biggest mistake he made with Blake at UNC. One perspective is that he was too trusting and got burned. Another is that he was willfully and intentionally ignorant of the situation. There's a fine line there, and no one will ever know the truth on this either way, because everyone involved has a good lawyer(s) and there's no real way to read the tea leaves. On the whole, I think he tries to run a clean program. The risk is that an assistant might not be so committed. That said, with a little assistance on oversight, the risks could be minimized (especially with aggressive self-reporting). So, I have some concerns, but no deal breakers.
My only other issue is that he really never transformed the Tar Heads into a power like everyone thought he would. I'm not convinced he is as good a coach as he was a decade ago. He is, however, imminently capable with a proven track record.
Thus, depending upon the price he could be a good choice. Tennessee could definitely do much worse (Petrino / Leach / etc.).
**In the interest of full disclosure, I did go to trade school (law school) at UNC after graduating from UT, but have never willingly pulled for UNC in any sporting event.
Also, did not represent Davis or Blake in litigation arising from UNC investigation.
