Butch Davis

I can understand for the life of me why Arkansas wouldn't hire Davis TODAY if he was good to go? He played for them, right?

With that said, I would take him before most others mentioned...he would bring a defensive mind, great recruiting, great staff possibilities, and instant stability...seems like a no brainer unless there are still concerns?

Isn't anyone else concerned about the trail of destruction that Davis has left? People say well it was a rogue booster at Miami or it was agents contacting players at UNC, none of it was Davis directly cheating. That's true, but I find it very hard to believe had no clue what was going on. I would be weary of Butch Davis and what kind of trouble he might bring with him. That said, the guy is an absolute winner. When he played LSU to the wire a couple years ago even though he had 13 players missing, I knew he could compete in the SEC.

Maybe the guy keeps his nose clean and reigns in his players, I don't know. I'd hate to have a run of successful years only to have those seasons vacated after the fact because of some violation that Davis allowed.

2 reasons Arky doesn't have him:
1) Believe it or not, he doesn't WANT the Arky job. He has made it clear his preference is Tennessee. My guess is he doesn't want to go back because he's already had to experience Arkansas once. :)
2) With Jerry Jones involved in the Arky search, the most delusional names will have to be eliminated first before they come to their senses. Jerry Jones is the perfect symbol of Arky fans - he has an aggrandized view of what level Arkansas should be hiring from.
I'd be surprised if Belichick isn't rumored to be on the next G6 to Fayette-nam.

Not a shot, just trying to answer the first question. Agree 100% with your post.

That's a fair point and a valid concern IMO. I just think that there are very few coaches who spend time at any major program who can't be connected in some way with the problems that go on at the institution. Wasn't Fisher coach in waiting when the whole academics and fighting fiascoes were going on at FSU? Lord knows Stoops' program has been riddled with violations too...
Not arguing with what you said at all, I just think that any coach will bring questions of "did he or didn't he?" if they've ever had any success.

He didn't leave a trail of destruction at Miami. The only one that could really be pinned on him would be the UNC stuff but the NCAA has cleared him. At Miami he took over a program on the NCAA watch list and turn them around.

This is the most frustrating name floating around out there. I sincerely believe based on evidence of him winning in the past that he would be the best hire to get us back to competing for the SEC.

With that being said, I feel like Dave Hart's not even looking at him. It makes me rage so hard. It's not to say that Strong or Fedora won't do fine, but this guy (Davis) is as close to a sure thing that you can get.

You're right on the money with this. I hope they give the guy a good look.

He got them to 8 wins with all of Davis' recruits. Let's see how Fedora does over the next 4 years.

Butch Davis' track record as a recruiter and talent evaluator is top notch.

I agree Davis would be a great hire and I read where he is interested in coaching in the SEC. I am wondering why we haven't herd him as a real candidate.

He may have been cleared but I'm sorry way too much coincidental evidence pointing to him being a shady character. Heck look at Miami during his watch. He would be a "sugar high" coach in my mind. Yes, we would improve and improve quickly, but I can almost guarantee you that there will be issues down the road. No thanks. Too many options out there that doesn't have baggage.

Here is a great coach cleared of any wrong doing but not good enough. I would take him or Tressel over any candidate that I am hearing we have interviewed. They are winners

You're right, he was gone before the Shapiro scandal.

IF it is not Gruden (still my #1 coaching wish)...

Butch Davis would do great - with Gus Malzahn as his OC (and possible HC in waiting, since Davis is 61). He is defensive minded, so he would put together a great D staff. Keep Graham, Pittman and bring in Tee. I would be one happy Vol fan!

Great scenario!

Agreed. Maybe bring back Shannon for DC?

Also, I know you're not the one saying this, but there are many out there who are concerned about his age. 61 isn't that old–We could keep him for 10 years and he would still not be ready for a home.

I'm not saying Bobby B. was great his last couple of years, but shoot, wasn't he 70 by 1990? Paterno kept a great team till the day he died–he was like what, 200?

Obviously, I'm not being literal, but I just don't think 61 is crazy old. Certainly not enough of a deterrent to keep me from giving him a chance if I'm a recruit.
