Butch Davis

Davis built the greatest roster in college football history. Recruiting should never be a concern with him.

Especially when our program has to work harder than any other top tier program (thanks to our geography) to compete in the SEC. What we need is someone who can recruit their @$$3$ off.

I've mentioned all that before as well but they don't seem to get it.

You can post links stating Butch cleaned up Miami and was cleared at UNC it doesn't matter. Folks are convinced he is dirty and would rather have another Dooley so they can be right.

Incorrect. First off, people citing a guy for being a "winner" and then talking about the 2000 season, so does that prove that Fulmer is winner due to his 98 season? What does recruiting in the hot bed of talent 12 years ago have to do with today? He's 62 and couldn't finish top 3 in the ACC in four tries in his last stint. I could support and be excited about quite a few hires: Strong, Gundy, Fisher, Patterson, Petrino(to an extent, but not this guy. I also heard about citing a guy's win loss record and heard all the excuses that followed with our last hire. It's time to put up or shut up and hire a winner with no excuses.

Butch isn't my first choice. If they don't hire a "Homerun" I would want Butch. No more experiments.

You're right, it's not experiment. It would be hiring a guy that could go win us 7, 8, maybe 9 on a good year due to his recruiting. By the time he got all his players he'd be 66. It's just too old. He'd be the definition of "settling" IMO. Good(use to be great) coach who seems to have lost the touch a little.

I respect your opinion. I just don't want another coach with a magic binder and a fabulous plan.

I think Davis would be a good value hire. I would offer him 2.5 million and see what kind of staff he could hire with 3.35 million.

5.8 million/year instead of 9 million for Gruden & Company. Recruiting would be strong and we could win with this idea.
The sec gauntlet would eat him alive

As do I yours. It's a safe pick. I don't want anymore more magic binders or bamboo either ha. I guess I'm just upset we have no "home-run" awaiting us it seems. I feel like we should do better.

If by "not a winner" you mean a BcS quirk away from playing in, and likely winning, the 2000 national title game, then yes... Butch isn't a winner.

I'm sorry guys, but the facts show that he inherited a UM program in 1995 that was still riddled with NCAA problems from Dennis Erickson and he CLEANED IT UP. All this out of control booster stuff didn't begin until a year after he left.

During his time at UM, he recruited (cleanly, at least according to the NCAA) these people to come play, even with significant scholarship reductions left from his predecessors: [it should be noted that this list is by no means exhaustive of the stars he got to Miami]
- Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Sinorice Moss, Devin Hester and Santana Moss
- Edgerrin James, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore, Najeh Davenport and Clinton Portis
- Bryant McKinnie, Eric Winston and Brett Romberg
- Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow II, and Greg Olsen
- Antrel Rolle, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, and Phillip Buchanon
- Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams (I bet all you new Broncos fans out there know him;)

I'm not saying I want him before Gruden, I'm just saying the facts show that this guy is a winner, and is capable of doing so cleanly.

Fulmer recruited a list just as impressive as that one in that same timeframe.

Davis is a good coach - better than Jimbo Fisher. I just think his baggage is going to keep him from getting this job

I saw a 247 update posted in the Strong topic that said Davis may get an interview or not. The update said they were hearing that some influential people may roll the dice on him.

Heard it from a very credible source that Butch wants the job. That said if he was cleared at UNC you take him.

I would hire Davis before Strong, Fedora, or Golden.

If Gundy, Patterson, More or Fisher want the job, that is the way I would go 1st.

I wouldn't mind seeing him as DC and recruiting coord. Doubt he would take anything other than HC position.

Keep your eye on the ball.

If the Gruden option is completely closed and Gundy and Fisher stay where they are at, I fully believe that Butch Davis will be our new coach.

I was told three weeks ago that Davis was the guy that we would get if Gruden and Fisher were ruled out.

I'm sorry, that's simply not based in fact.

Fulmer was a fine recruiter, even to his last years, but he was never close to as good a recruiter as Butch.

True dat. Butch would get us back to recruiting effectively in the Carolinas and Florida. We need this desperately and he would crush it there.

Great defensive guy, great recruiter, has NFL experience, turned around two programs, and plays SEC type football. What's not to love?

If our only options are Strong or Gundy, I will take Davis in a heartbeat. Honestly, he was my #3 guy all along.
