You can post links stating Butch cleaned up Miami and was cleared at UNC it doesn't matter. Folks are convinced he is dirty and would rather have another Dooley so they can be right.
Incorrect. First off, people citing a guy for being a "winner" and then talking about the 2000 season, so does that prove that Fulmer is winner due to his 98 season? What does recruiting in the hot bed of talent 12 years ago have to do with today? He's 62 and couldn't finish top 3 in the ACC in four tries in his last stint. I could support and be excited about quite a few hires: Strong, Gundy, Fisher, Patterson, Petrino(to an extent, but not this guy. I also heard about citing a guy's win loss record and heard all the excuses that followed with our last hire. It's time to put up or shut up and hire a winner with no excuses.
Butch isn't my first choice. If they don't hire a "Homerun" I would want Butch. No more experiments.
You're right, it's not experiment. It would be hiring a guy that could go win us 7, 8, maybe 9 on a good year due to his recruiting. By the time he got all his players he'd be 66. It's just too old. He'd be the definition of "settling" IMO. Good(use to be great) coach who seems to have lost the touch a little.
If by "not a winner" you mean a BcS quirk away from playing in, and likely winning, the 2000 national title game, then yes... Butch isn't a winner.
I'm sorry guys, but the facts show that he inherited a UM program in 1995 that was still riddled with NCAA problems from Dennis Erickson and he CLEANED IT UP. All this out of control booster stuff didn't begin until a year after he left.
During his time at UM, he recruited (cleanly, at least according to the NCAA) these people to come play, even with significant scholarship reductions left from his predecessors: [it should be noted that this list is by no means exhaustive of the stars he got to Miami]
- Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Sinorice Moss, Devin Hester and Santana Moss
- Edgerrin James, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore, Najeh Davenport and Clinton Portis
- Bryant McKinnie, Eric Winston and Brett Romberg
- Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow II, and Greg Olsen
- Antrel Rolle, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, and Phillip Buchanon
- Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams (I bet all you new Broncos fans out there know him
I'm not saying I want him before Gruden, I'm just saying the facts show that this guy is a winner, and is capable of doing so cleanly.
Davis is a good coach - better than Jimbo Fisher. I just think his baggage is going to keep him from getting this job
