Butch Davis

This. Citing a guy's W-L record without understanding the context gives a pretty misleading perspective on his abilities.

I'm on the Butch Davis bandwagon, I think. He's one of the best recruiters in the country, bar none, and plays the style of football it takes to win in the SEC.

As for the observation that Fedora's winning with Davis's players, well, yeah. Davis recruited a really solid team, and not just by UNC standards. Larry Coker won a national championship with Davis's players, too. You'd be hard pressed to find a Miami fan who'd rather have Coker than Davis.

Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer laugh at this.

And that UNC team is nowhere near what they were in 2009.

TIFWIW;

@SaveUK_ Stoops just said "Butch Davis is the DC, Randy Shannon assistant DC, Clint Hurt DL coach/head of recruiting, and Petrino OC"

So we want to hire a guy that pretty much welcomes NCAA sanctions wherever he goes? Sure, what the hell...

His 3rd year at UNC he had far superior talent to most teams in the ACC and went 8-5. 4-8, and three 8-5 seasons in a row. How is a 62 year old who can't win more than 8 in the ACC going to lead us anywhere? Worst candidate otb IMO. 1. Fisher 2. Strong 3. Gundy then a huge gap 4. Butch Jones 5. Fedora 6. Golden then enormous gap 7. Davis.

Considering Fisher & Gundy aren't realistic options, you might want to reconsider Davis.

I would disagree. And if they are then Strong better be the next head coach. You would seriously be optimistic about our program with Davis leading it?

I've heard a lot of talk that Davis has been cleared of all the muck in the UNC mess. Given this, I think he would be a home run hire.

He's proven to be a great recruiter, and he is defensive minded--which is what I think we need now.

Are we not giving Davis enough buzz as a fan base?

I'm torn between him and Strong as my top choice.

I'd be all for Butch Davis from a coaching standpoint, but I'd want to do some serious homework before making him an offer.

Supposedly, these types of charges/suspicions have followed him at two separate locations. Sorry, no link; just regurgitating a coversation I recall being held on The Sports Animal about him.

Davis, at UNC, never won more than four conference games. He was 24-15 (12-12) his last three years at UNC. In 2008, they went 8-5. In 2010, they went 8-5.

He never finished better than third at UNC.

Davis is not the answer.

If Davis wasn't playing 2010 without 7-11 key players which most ended up top 3 rd picks that team would have been bcs bound and possibly in title contention

Butch Davis is not a winner & will just extend UT's probation or get them in trouble with the NCAA. I'm done with the UT AD if they hire this guy. All it would ensure is that UT will be looking for another head coach in five years or less.

Duuuuuuuuuuude u take a wrong turn somewhere?? Cause you obviously posted this thinking you were in a forum full of people that live in reality. Just make sure man.:hi:

Apparently he "served his time" on those, so to speak.

Out of all the coaches being thrown about Davis' teams have the most SEC defensive scheme. Offense is an afterthought in this league.

He did nothing of the sort because he wasn't accused of any violations while at Miami. His successor was.
It is worth noting that when Butch got to Miami in 1995 they were still serving out a bowl ban and under probation and scholarship losses for three years.
He was not responsible for those.
The ones you're probably referring to happened under his successor, Coker. Nevin Shapiro (the booster at the center of this mess) himself says he didn't meet any of the players until AFTER the 2001 Awards Banquet.
Davis left after the 2000 season so that clears him by a full year! He cleaned up the UM program and proved himself to have the finest recruiting record college football has probably ever seen (just look up who he recruited if you don't believe me, but names like Andre Johnson and Ed Reed, among MANY others, are pretty hard to argue with).
Pile that on to how much winning he was responsible for, and I think you have to look very seriously at Butch as a viable candidate.

If by "not a winner" you mean a BcS quirk away from playing in, and likely winning, the 2000 national title game, then yes... Butch isn't a winner.

I'm sorry guys, but the facts show that he inherited a UM program in 1995 that was still riddled with NCAA problems from Dennis Erickson and he CLEANED IT UP. All this out of control booster stuff didn't begin until a year after he left.

During his time at UM, he recruited (cleanly, at least according to the NCAA) these people to come play, even with significant scholarship reductions left from his predecessors: [it should be noted that this list is by no means exhaustive of the stars he got to Miami]
- Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Sinorice Moss, Devin Hester and Santana Moss
- Edgerrin James, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore, Najeh Davenport and Clinton Portis
- Bryant McKinnie, Eric Winston and Brett Romberg
- Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow II, and Greg Olsen
- Antrel Rolle, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, and Phillip Buchanon
- Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams (I bet all you new Broncos fans out there know him;)

I'm not saying I want him before Gruden, I'm just saying the facts show that this guy is a winner, and is capable of doing so cleanly.

I've mentioned all that before as well but they don't seem to get it.

I've got to say, all this willful denial of facts is disturbing. What's more, to say something like Butch "isn't a winner" shows that one's knowledge of football only goes back about 5 years, which is worrisome indeed for what it says about some fellow Vol fans.
They don't hire any old crappy coach out of college to coach in the NFL!!!! The Browns came calling because the way he turned around Miami was amazing. Geez, why do people not understand how good this guy was/is?

Anyway, enough ranting.
Gruden is my firm #1 (unless Cowher comes into play through magical unicorn rainbows, in which case they would both be my #1). Stoops is my #2. Butch Davis has to be my #3 over the next few names.

Strong, Fedora, Fisher, and Gundy would all be fine hires I'm sure, but none meet the "proven success as HC" requirement in my eyes except for Gru, Stoops, and Davis.
