Butch interested in Maryland job

I was thinking that, but not sure. After the Alabama "30k a year / I'm going to smoke a cigar and blow smoke in your face because I'm still making bank off you" fiasco, it would not surprise me one bit. Especially since they're having to buy out Durkin's contract.

How do? He couldn’t win with consecutive top 5 classes here. He won’t recruit at anywhere near that level at Maryland.

Also, he’d have to play Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State every year. He couldn’t even beat James Franklin at Vandy; how could he do it at Penn State?

He couldn't win? 3-0 in bowl games, back to back 9-4 seasons, victories over Florida, UGA, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and other strong SEC teams. He won, he just didn't win enough for our fan base. I personally enjoyed going undefeated in bowls game and being nationally relevant again - it was awesome.

But to answer your question, I don't think he's going to win championships there. I simply think he'll consistently put a decent enough product on the field that Maryland fans and administration won't burn him at the stake. Especially after he pours his heart and soul into their program like he did ours.

I agree with another poster that the BEST fit is a middle of the pack team in the ACC. I think he'll be able to keep his job long enough to build a solid program.

So if he says I'll do it for 200k a year, do we still have to pay him the remainder of whatever we are paying him a year? If so he could undercut the crap out of everyone else.

I don't think the lowest bidder is what they're going to be looking for.

If he pulls another stunt like that I hope he slips and falls on a helmet

One thing about Butch, that joker was always so transparent but didn't know it. In this case, it's very obvious that this story is a plant from his agent or himself. He is contractually obligated to look for employment that would offset what we pay him, in order to stay within contract and keep getting his buyout from UT. So, he needs evidence out there publicly every year that he's trying to get a high-paying job. That's all this is. If it were otherwise, the article would say that Maryland was interested in him.

I’m sure he’d be interested in any Power 5 head gig... at least he should be. He’s a freaking intern now...
Yep, not to mention how sweet it'll be when someone in the Vols crowd holds up a we want the terps sign!

I think that he risks losing his buyout if he doesn't make a good faith effort to actively pursue a head coaching position and at the going rate. He could get away with a slightly below average salary, but if he blatantly undercuts the crap out of it he wouldn't be adhering to what he agreed to in his buyout. UT could end payments and Butch would have to litigate to get any money from UT. It's not worth it. It would also make him a less attractive hire by other potential employers down the road.

Agreed. He’s a better fit for non-P5. UTEP maybe? Can’t get much worse there. Notice I didn’t say that it can’t get any worse.

I kind of wish all of our XHCs would land some major college football jobs.

Saturday’s would be more interesting to just check in on each of them from time to time. Dream scenario would be:

Dooley at Mizzou
Kiffen at Auburn
Jones at a Mississippi school
Fulmer at Bama..... and purposeful runs it into the ground. :)

Fulmer could take the AD job at Bama and reduce their football budget to $20. Pocket the rest and parachute out after a year, and come back home with his mission complete.

I agree that it wasn’t all bad...until last year. It was a house of cards here that fell in on him because he was in over his head. We would have one less win for sure right now, be decimated with injuries again, be truly sweating the Charlotte game, and have no hope of beating anyone else. Him returning would have cemented back to back 0-8 seasons in the SEC. JG wouldn’t have progressed and Chryst wouldn’t be here, neither would Shrout. Adrian Martinez possibly would be to Butch’s credit but there’s no guarantee of that and he wouldn’t be ready even if he were. He pulled us out of a mess and then dumped us right back in. Had we gone 6-7 with a bowl loss and the admin moved in another direction I don’t think there would’ve been quite the vitriol for Jones but he produced the worst UT record ever and left freaking Ohio St now as the only team never to lose 8 games. The post-Bama game celebration alone shows we easily made the right call. He should show some respect to the place he lived for years, the kids he brought in here, and the school that is still funding his household. Oh well. Life moves on.

I would lol so hard if they hired Butch. You just got rid of a guy who created a toxic culture...so you want to hire someone who has also created toxic cultures in his past jobs? Alright then

Jones should be at home the closer he gets to Washington DC, his rhetoric will fit right in with that crowd.

Butch Jones reminds me of what Vladimir Putin said about negotiating with Obama...

"It's like playing chess with a pigeon. The pigeon knocks over all the pieces; craps on the board; then struts around like it won the match."

Go Vols.
