Butch Jones Follies

He's a walking, talking cliche. Does he actually have the ability to think? I think GI Joe with the kung-foo grip has more originality.

I believe that the "Butch" Jones as presented to us is a very carefully orchestrated construct. "This" is what a coach looks like (gets Sgt. Carter crewcut). A coach sounds like "this"- rehearses a new bit of coach-speak. A coach has a tough-sounding name - hmm "Butch" sounds tough. A real coach can manifest so much anger and righteous fury that he literally turns purple - does 10 reps of hernia inducing strains and grunts in the mirror.

That's it, the making of Butch.

I think it’s odd for people to celebrate a coach’s failures somewhere else simply because he didn’t meet your expectations here.
I won't bash Butch, but I get it. Dooley was a Narcissistic jerk while he was at UT, but he moved on. Butch couldn't let his failure here drop. Going under Saban's wing, getting a peanut salary to keep UT paying rather than Bama (or maybe they did pay him for what he's worth.. I think 35k per year), blowing cigar smoke in the faces (metaphorically) of the players he sat in parents living room and recruited.

Yep, I get it. I don't condone it, but I understand.

@ Georgia State this weekend....likely will be 1-9. I'm not sure they have Butch's back.
Oops - Arkansas St. Loses to GA State NEXT week. Today, they are losing to ULM. Sorry, just confusing the losses.

Wow, that's pretty dead-on! Sgt Carter haircut that requires "Butch-wax." I wore my hair like that when I was 7 or 8! He probably wheels around and scowls in the mirror, perfecting that look of indignation, practicing that look of increduality that his players didn't execute his perfect game plan. " I can't believe my genius hasn't translated to a winning season ....or at least TWO wins!"

I'd say there is an 80% chance he is fired after Saturday if they lose. It's hard enough to recruit to Jonesboro with a winning record now add a 1 win season & Butch being Butch I'd say he is gone. Money isn't going to be an issue to fire him

I’d love to understand how a poser like him who has gotten rich off folks paying him to leave continues to get more opportunities

Butch probably needed to reset with an FCS job to be honest. Or a G5 job with zero expectations. Arkansas State isn't a powerhouse but they've had a nice run of 8+ win seasons over the past decade, so there are some expectations there.

After 1 season? Not even a full season? I don’t think they’d do him like that.

I dunno man. Ark st is kind of like Boise St was like 10-15 years ago. Kind of an under the radar kind of school that produces some good teams and coaches which go on to much bigger programs.

I dunno a great deal about what Botch inherited there. Maybe it was always intended to be a complete rebuild and if so, perhaps I am looking through the wrong lenses here.

If in fact, he was brought in being expected to have a decent year and rolls out a 1 burger, things could get ugly for him. I'm not sure that he will be employable anywhere in any capacity for a long time. I doubt even Saban would take him back as a $35k a year coffee boy. The St Nick rehab program requires coaches who might actually have a shot at a bigger job.

Butch is not a good coach but you sell him kind of short. He's at Arkansas St now, not some big job.

Butch coached 2 places before he came to Tennessee and was actually pretty good at each. Yes he followed Brian Kelly both times but his best teams at Central Michigan and Cincy were in his 3rd season there, when most of Kelly's players were gone. I bet Central Michigan would take him back - they've actually stunk overall since he left.

He absolutely does not belong in any sort of big job but he is capable of being successful at smaller jobs.

He is not capable. He has been discovered. He cant fool people any longer.

Butch and the Red Wolves are working hard on their 9th loss in a row. Down 11 to ULM halfway through the 3rd quarter.

Arkansas State stumbles to 2-9 with loss at Georgia State.

Brick by brick, Jones is putting his stamp on this program.

I get it and hold Peyton accountable to a certain extent. However, Peyton is a P.R. guy, obviously, he will make lots of money off the brand he created for himself. If fans are expecting Peyton to get his hands dirty with Tennessee football, then think again.

Peyton is not going to come out and say negative about anyone. Especially, before things are obviously bad. I would like to think that he still loves the University of Tennessee but he isn't going to get wrapped up in letting his opinions get in the way of anything much less his image or money.
Peyton's a Vol legend and a FAN. He had an opinion of a coach that didn't hold up...me too. If you need God, dial 9 before the number.

You have to look a level deeper. You have to look at the competition he beat and circumstances. IIRC, the win % of the teams Jones beat while at Cincy was around 35%. He played LOTS of bad teams.

It was 45% at Cincy and 40% at Central Michigan. Butch had trouble beating the better teams in his own conference (even though he won his division 4 out of 6 years between Central Michigan and Cincinnati) but he actually had multiple wins against P5 teams. They weren't great P5 teams, but a G5 beating any P5 is still a nice win for teams at that level.

My point is that Butch is not a great coach at any level, but he was a pretty good coach at Central Michigan and Cincinnati. He won both MAC title games he made it to at Central Michigan, and his teams won 2 bowl games against P5 opponents at Cincinnati

Jones frankly was and is an awful coach who looks better than his talent because he benefited from Kelly's coat tails and then some talent that dropped into his lap at UT. He's the biggest empty suit used car salesman I think I've ever seen.

Butch's most successful teams at Central Michigan and Cincy were in year 3, when most of Kelly's players were gone. The only truly awful year he had was his first year at Cincinnati because there was so much attrition from the Kelly team that went 12-1 the previous season.

He's totally a used car salesman as you said, but the lower levels that can lead to some success.
