Butch Jones Follies

“He’s an off-the-field coach for us. He does a lot of things for me personally as a special assistant in terms of washing my car and retrieving my laundry from the cleaners. He’s done a really good job for me, and I really like having him be a part of our staff. He’s done a really good job.”
can just imagine a few years ago saban watching film on Tennessee and realizing that it was butch who recruited JG to Tennessee and quickly deciding that he should remain as an off-the-field coach indefinitely.

Fact is. Butch, so far, is the best coach we've had since Fulmer. Hopefully Heupel will be better.
Records don't always tell the quality of a coach. He had talent drop into his lap. He had an incredible windfall of kids like Hurd who always wanted to be Vols and legacies. The ONLY thing he did well was make his used car salesman pitch to those kids. From development to game day, he is incompetent. His record isn't a testimony to him being the "best coach since Fulmer"... but rather how good those kids actually were.

He’s still running the read option without actually using the read. The QB never keeps the ball.

Butch 100% doesn’t care about the players. That’s one area where Pruitt was actually far superior. He was 100% about bringing attention to himself. Was always the first to be there to get his high five after a TD to make sure he was on TV. Squeezed Josh Dobbs out of his own damn senior picture.

YES! The man was an absolute attention whore. I still cannot believe his picture was on the back of the Jumbotron.

One other thing he did (besides all the others mentioned in this thread) that is embedded in my memory was that game where he could visibly be seen on camera mouthing, “F*** em all!,” talking about the fans who were booing something he did.

There it is in a microcosm. Jones thinks he's "innovative" and original. He applied those ideas to schemes and player development. He literally thinks he's smart enough to reinvent football.
Wow. He really has an idiotic approach, I'll say that.
But anyways, Tennessee's back. Putting together a couple nice offensive performances. Build on it .

The bashing from our fan base toward Butch stems directly from his behavior after he left. He showed his true self, being an *******, especially toward his former players. He deserves every bashing that he receives. I hope that he fails miserably.

👍🏻

He had losing records his first year at Cincy and Tennessee. Plus some of Arkansas State's losses have been close. His team will be better next year.

Plus Butch isn't here any more. Can we just let it go and focus on the team and head coach we have now?

Thats unlikely. Only two former coaches that I hate, and Butch is at the top of that list.

And of course he blames his players for losing last night...What a jagoff. Butch Jones is off to a nightmarish start at Arkansas State (atozsports.com)
“I was very disappointed in everything, from our execution to our mental intensity,” added Jones.
I could tolerate Pruitt's "aaiight" easier than Butch's abstract platitudes.

Statements like those from Butch, while he was here, epitomize why he is still reviled by our fan base. He smugly denigrates players with pretentious euphemisms and thinks he's clever for it while attempting to hold himself aloof from any accountability.

I'm pretty indifferent to the reasons most fans despise our ex coaches. Kiffin was the 6.5 we thought was a 10 that dumped us... Dooley thought he was too good to recruit... Pruitt was a cheater that micro managed everything into oblivion....
I don't think it's possible to be a college HC without being a megalomaniac to some degree.

Butch's complete lack of character makes him worthy of continued despise.

Remember when Butch - after doing something really stupid - would say he got so many texts from other coaches telling him how great of a job he was doing?

I can’t believe our media never challenged him on things like that.

Remember how every time we’d get a big play he made sure we immediately went to a hurry-up run right up the middle that got stuffed for a yard or less every single time?

I live near Jonesboro & he might be fired this year....lots of smoke anyway. They have had some great coaches there, last few are Auburns current coach, Malazohn & The Liberty coach. They have a really big booster that is a nearly a billionaire & rumored he isn't happy. He donated the money for their stadium retrofit & it's named after him & his bank

Then his master plan continues! Live off another buyout and back to Bama!

"Butch" is an entirely fictional made-up persona. The horn player gets a Sgt. Carter haircut, practices yelling into the mirror until he turns purple, and ditches the every-man Lyle for the moniker of the tough kid from The Little Rascals. Sprinkle with ****** slogans you might pick up at a team building retreat and a coach is born.

There is nothing real or substantial about Butch Jones. He is playing a role, what he imagines a smart, witty, hard-nosed coach to be.
