Butch Jones post game comments

Any optimism at this point would be defined as blind. We have seen no absolutely no improvement in the team over the season. We have regressed in every area of football from on field performance to discipline to scheme. We have been out coached the last several games. Are we down on talent? Sure. To the level of beat downs we received? Not IMO. From a talent standpoint we should be at least on equal footing against Vandy yet they come into our house and whip us. Again, there is absolutely no evidence for any level of optimism except for Butch's recruiting which I give him an A+.

As sad as this sounds I was sitting at the Vanderbilt game thinking, we may win this game but it's evident that vandy has more talent.....
We're slow, we haven't had a good game played by any qb all year.( I hope ferguson is the man for the job.). Our offensive line owes Tyler bray a big thanks for making them look a helluva lot better than they were for 2 years. Defensively we have a guy that was gonna grey shirt starting at nickel back(swafford) who is obviously to slow to be on the field in sec games, our corners outside of sutton are sub par. To sum it up there is 24 4 stars on Tennessee's current roster, Jones has 19 4 stars and 1 5 star commited for next season. Tennessee's future success depends more on his ability to keep this class intact than anything else. I believe a lot of people will be surprised how much better the coaching gets as the level of talent rises.

You may be right but it makes me nervous to the possibility of having to rely on so many freshman next year.

I would have a great deal of respect and admiration for CBJ if he would have just said that the staff had a bad game and that they must do better in coaching all aspects of the game.

how many times do I have to tell you that he is not interested in appeasing your ego. There is no reason to do that as you try and recruit kids, while you tell the whole world you had a sucky game. He knows he did. We know it. Players know it. If you think coaches don't have bad games each week on all levels, you don't watch much football. Or don't pay attention.

I applaud you for your blind enthusiasm. I really do, no joking. But if you think that the UT fan base isn't dwindling at an alarming rate, well go to the mall. I am an old guy, long in the teeth if you will. Seeing oposing teams apparel was an anomaly. Now it's about as common as UT apparel (I'm talking about Knoxville btw). We are losing a whole generation of Vol fans. It's sad really. And what is really m Ind boggling to me is the level of Vol fans that seem to be ok with the level of play we are currently experiencing.

Now, before you or anyone throw out that I'm another delusional negavol with unrealistic expectations, I realize CBJ was dealt a difficult hand. I don't think he or even any of his staff should be fired. But, CBJ was an experiment. While his resume was decent, he is very inexperienced. He was a last min desperation hire from Hart.

I don't pretend to know the reason Hart made the hire. Maybe it's true and no one else would take the job. After Strong left us at the alter it appeared that Hart had a knee jerk reaction. Maybe he had exhausted all other avenues but CBJ was and continues to be an experiment.

Will all the components mesh in the test tube and the experiment be a success? Well we'll see in about three years. All we have now is to look at the pieces see if they seem to be coming together and for me I have my doubts that it's going to work. I hope I'm wrong though. Go Big Orange!

Well said, exactly where I am at.

Apparently you think Charlie Strong would have been the better choice. And you say Butch is inexperienced. Charlie Strong would have had 3 years as a head coach. How is that more experience than Butch?

One other thing. Butch Jones as HC at Cincinnati played Charlie Strong at Louisville 3 times. Guess what Butch won 2 and lost 1. The one loss was in overtime.

So really Butch is 2-0-1 against the experienced Charlie Strong.

Where did you get from my post that I wanted Strong? Quite the opposite actually. I was dead set against Charlie Strong.

The inexperienced Dooley was 1-0 vs the experienced Jones.

It isn't my ego that is at issue here.... I am not getting paid millions of dollars to be the head coach of the Tennessee Vols and getting out coached by the likes of James Franklin and getting bludgeoned by a number of teams this year. Process Process Process per CBJ - well his process isnt cutting it. And his gimmicks and slogan are tired but I am sure that he will come up with more. Heck the Cincy faithful (as well as players) had grown tired of the CBJ euphemisms. How many times did CBJ say in pressers that the players must execute? Saying that players need to execute is throwing them under the bus inasmuch as that means logically that they did not execute.

You can't let your ego get the best of you. When Coach Jones said during the post-game interview that they needed a touchdown on that 4th down play; that was pure ego that made that decision. That's a good way to kick the confidence out of your kicker and I think it overwrites the game winner against South Carolina.

His kicker couldnt get the kick there. Period. He either had to punt it, go for it on 4th and 19 or try to catch them offguard. Of all the coaching questions, that's not one of them.
