Butch says "Kickoffs to be eliminated"

You have a picture of beer in your avi. What kills more people, beer or kickoff returns? Players know before they get to the college level that the whole game is dangerous.

Now dont go harping on beer.

I'm sure that beer is related to alot of deaths each year...I'm also sure it has alot to do with many births.

Well...atleast the fun part.

Player safety should always be the foremost concern, but people who willingly pursue a career in football literally are painfully aware that the sport is a high risk-high reward activity. It doesn’t require an M.D., with a specialization in neurology, to realize that long-term irreparable brain damage could be a foreseeable consequence of prolonged participation in a contact sport. Attorneys will undoubtedly benefit most from the massive class-action lawsuits filed against the NFL. If the league is, indeed, guilty of negligence, i.e. failure to inform players of existing research regarding the long-term effects of head trauma sustained by football players and failure to adequately provide for their safety, they certainly should suffer the financial repercussions. On the other hand, for players to engage in their chosen profession for years and then cry, “Foul! I didn’t know that football could cause this kind of cumulative damage” just doesn’t pass the common sense test. On one level, it is as ludicrous as having to put warning labels on coffee cups indicating that “this is hot and could burn you.”

On a more pragmatic level, I recall seeing a special on television a while back, which suggested that helmet manufacturers were looking into research pertaining to the structure of bighorn sheep skulls and how they are able to sustain repeated and unprotected head-to-head contact without significant apparent damage. They discovered that the skulls of these sheep contained two layers of bone separated by a thick, spongy layer of bone. I don’t know if that research has actually been implemented yet in the manufacture of helmets but it is something to look out for in the future. Similar research has been conducted on, before you start laughing, woodpecker skulls. See http://jeb.biologists.org/content/211/19/3085.full.pdf and

Welcome to liberal utopia... It's craptastic..

It has nothing to do with liberals. It has everything to do with lawyers.

Most of the guys in this thread are arguing this from the standpoint of the game of football, and the sad reality is that that's irrelevant. Football is going to keep changing in whatever ways the NFL and colleges think will minimize legal liability. The people who make all the profits in football are worried about lawsuits. That's all that is going to matter. The "we're turning into a nation of sissies!" argument is beside the point.

Actual risk and potential legal liability are completely different things, unfortunately.

Where does it end? What will be next that they take away?

I'm personally happy about the cigarettes gone from restaurants. I don't want to smell that when I'm eating, or anytime actually.

On one level, it is as ludicrous as having to put warning labels on coffee cups indicating that “this is hot and could burn you.”

Since you're going to bring that into the mix, I do take it you do have a full understanding of the originating case? The coffee in the cup that sparked the entire debacle was 30F hotter than the restaurant was allowed by corporate to serve it, having been held and served at 195F. The restaurant knew the inherent risks, knew that it could potentially disturb the structural integrity of the cups and lids, knew that it was hot enough to cause intense physical pain, yet served it at that temperature anyway. The restaurant had also been warned previously by health inspectors and made to turn the dial down. This is why the woman who sued them won; it was their negligence, their refusal to heed warnings, that caused the incident in the first place.

What the heck does this have to do with football? Quite a bit. Several other informed posters have discussed the legal liabilities involved, and the implications down the line should there not be some type of resolution. I know of more than a few people who have pulled their kid from (or just flat-out won't let them play) the game altogether because of the mounting risks from players who care more about looking cool and making the highlight reel than playing a fundamentally sound game. These are guys who talk with pride about their high school and college experiences, too; for them to make an informed, evidence-based decision like this on their children's speaks volumes about where the game is headed.

Removing kickoffs from the game might not be the answer; removing the incentives - financial and social - for players to brutalize their opponents beyond what is required for fundamental game play is definitely part of the answer.

I miss the homemade light-as-air rolls we used to have with lunch. The "52% Whole Wheat Thin Biscuits" suck. The "Grade F Ground Beef with cherry and other fillers" sucks. The only thing that's improved is the cheap tasteless iceberg lettuce has been replaced with nice, leafy, (actually) green lettuce.

Oh, and the sweet potato fries with cayenne pepper. Those are so good...

Tennessee's defense actually was the pioneers of eliminating tackling. See last year's defense.

We thought they just sucked. Truth is, they were trying to change the game for the greater good.

Hope Roger Goodfernuthin didn't take notes from us. Tommy Brady, Peyton and the gang would love it if he did.

CBJ cares about player safety more than just about any coach I can remember. He's behind the player's 100% and is always going to do what's best for them.

Y! SPORTS

What's next...we convert to touch or Flag football...He** I'm for it if we can win once again....what ever it takes Butchy Boy

Our lust for blood should never outweigh the safety and longevity of the players on the field. If giving up kickoffs saves players from a broken neck, chronic concussion syndrome, or early onset dementia, then we must put aside personal desire for catharsis and do what is best for them.

..........................:eek:lol:

They're not animals bred for our pleasure, they're human beings. Maybe we should treat them as such.

No they are not "animals bred for pleasure" (good grief aren't we a bit over dramatic). They are FREE human beings with the KNOWLEDGE that they play a rough, physical sport with an element of real physical danger. They CHOOSE to play this game FREELY. NO ONE twists their arms and makes them do this.. It's not much different than FREELY CHOOSING to do any other LEGAL activity KNOWN to have negative repercussions to your health.

If you're so worried about protecting football players how about we focus that concern on the youngest playing the game, i.e. little league, middle school and hi school.. Isn't ironic that the most concern seems to be directed towards the college and pro ranks where THE MONEY is and where players actually start to receive real compensation via free educations and paychecks...

The only other suggestion I have is to go ahead and outlaw contact, break out the flags and let's just have the NFFL (National Flag Football League)...

Can't you hear the announcers now........ "Whoaaa Nellie, you could hear that flag ripping from his belt a good five feet away.. Definitely the 'jerk off' of the day."

Wooo weee, I know I can't wait....

onsides kicks ? looks like scoring and needing the ball back right away is hopeless in this case

Glad he didnt say he was wanting the forward pass eliminated..be hard forall the lemmings to fall in line behind all his cutting edge ideas..did he mention, the Flying V or DBs using stick-em?
