Butch says "Kickoffs to be eliminated"

Here is a serious question for all you supporters of this potential monumental change in football....

How many violent collisions in football whether it be on a kick-off, punt return, interception, running play, passing play, crack block (etc) result in no injuries whatsoever???

The answer is that almost everyone one of those hits results in no injuries to either player.

The problem is, nobody really knows which hits are the dangerous ones. I don't know the answer to any of this.

so basically this is more about money down the road than safety, just another example of money ruining a sport.

I like CBJ. Don't get me wrong. But, I wonder when he will be confident enough or successful enough to stop dropping names during every interview. Maybe he is just being chatty but sometimes it makes me think that he is trying to prove that he is relevant because he has phone conversations with Peyton Manning or whomever.

Be careful what you say on VN!!! The negativity police are everywhere.

God forbid you say anything critical of the Heralded nay Vaunted greatest coach on the planet - the magnificent CBJ else ye be ridiculed and mocked from this day forwarded.

And it was even more dangerous before most states mandated helmets be used. And people complained like hell about it despite the data.

I really do get the argument that the game is being watered down. I just don't think it's quite as bad as people think.

It boils down to a personal choice which is gradually being taken away. We should complain it is my choice if I want to wear a helmet, play football, wear a seat belt, or anything else that affects MY safety. Everyone should be made aware of the data and then have the freedom to choose for themselves not have it shoved down their throat by governing bodies that think they are smarter than me and need to make my decisions for me. My point is it comes back to personal responsibility I played football and suffered 6 known concussions and it was my choice and I don't blame anyone else. My goal was to give more than I received.

I get that. But if data suggests there's an issue and there are things you can do to mitigate the issue, why wouldn't you look at making prudent changes?

Flying wedges, chop blocks, head slaps, helmet shots, crack backs, horse collar tackles, etc have all been modified or eliminated for safety reasons.

Crack blocks have not been eliminated - the only change in that area has been the helmet to helmet contact which was not instituted in response to the crack block.

But eliminating the kick-off is greater than all those changes put together.

It has nothing to do with the game. It has to do with legal liability and CYA down the road when lawsuits go before juries. Kickoffs are the most dangerous plays in the game. It's hard to argue that you've done everything possible to keep players safe if you haven't eliminated them.

I doubt anybody's happy about it, but it's circle the wagons time.

You have a picture of beer in your avi. What kills more people, beer or kickoff returns? Players know before they get to the college level that the whole game is dangerous.

Im for it. I say space all 22 players evenly in all parts of the field. Place the ball at a random spot. Blindfold them, and make them spin around until dizzy. Then they have to crawl around on all fours. The first person who finds it has to b1tc& slap all the players on the other team while yelling duck. Once the player has been butch slapped, they can take off their blindfold and pursue the slapper. That would be entertaining!

There have been a few modifications to crack backs in the NFL. Not sure if any of those have made it to college yet.

I understand safety but why not make equipment better instead of eliminating part of the game... I mean they haven't changed the speed limit n most people die when the hit head on .... what did they do?? They made cars safer because they know wrecks r going to happen..

This what's wrong with America dream to play in the NFL in the most violent sport but then sue them when u find out its dangerous ... what when they played high school n pee wee.. how do we know those hits r not causing it..

Americans r fat lazy n want to make the next generation of men like women... take our guns n now take our football...geez
this is just another way to water it down so they can try n get women on the field....lol

I feel better now..

Because equipment isn't going to stop whiplash, or brains bouncing off the skull in heavy impact collisions.

I don't have a link in front of me, but I've seen some numbers before. A disproportionately large number of serious injuries occur on kickoffs, considering what a tiny percentage of plays kickoffs make up. Which makes sense, considering that it's the only play when everybody on both teams gets to run right at each other with a full head of steam.

Obviously it's a symbolic thing more than anything. But everything that's being done w/r/t football and safety now, at both the NFL and college levels, is with an eye towards what will persuade a jury someday. It's too bad.

yeah it's all legal, has nothing to do with actually protecting players' health.

This has nothing to do with the NFL or NCAA. They know changes have to be made at the top to protect pop warner through high school. Because when lawsuits start taking away football at the beginning and lower stages, the issue trickles up to the higher levels of the game.

I don't like it either but they have to protect the brand from a business standpoint.

I really hope that doesn't happen. Football is a violent sport. Its not for sissy boys. The big wigs in the NCAA are gonna ruin this great sport

The nc2a is going to legislate itself out of business. HOPEFULLY. Academia should NEVER be in charge of athletics. They don't have a clue what sports are about.

I think they should place the ball on the fifty yard line, let each team field 11 players on their own 20. When the whistle blows, 22 players dash for the ball. The first player to get it then runs with the ball until tackled. His team then has first down from that spot.

This way four or five guys can't target a single player from the opposing team as no one will know who's going to get to the ball first.:):):)
