'18 CA QB JT Shrout (UT signee)

Watched film on JT, he's talented. Can't put my finger on it, but he reminds me of someone...i just question his accuracy and decision making in certain situations; statistically speaking 51% completions and 1 int. per 17 passes...

i think a lot of the issues that plagued the QB's can be fixed. i don't think either benefited from an overly productive running game, and neither got what i would call "good" pass protection.

totally agree on JG's pre snap. he didn't see things coming at times, even when it was apparent. that can be taught. i think QD is better neck up, but sometimes still made some weird decisions. again, i think that can be taught.

i think what you're seeing, is a back up plan with Shrout. i think the plan has to be RS him just due to lack of experience, and development.

and if both qb's stay on the roster, another open competition.

as for JG's attitude, i think he got humbled on the field a little bit this past season. and i think both qb's benefit from the departure of CBJ and the land of open promises.

Hope you are 100% correct. I hope all are healthy headed into next fall. I hope with John Kelly that they have a coach they can trust and a system that actually works.

I'm more concerned than you seem to be about JG's mental development. If he were a true Fr... then you'd expect those kinds of limits and caution. But he'd been in the system a full year and had gotten a lot of reps.

My hope is that it was a maturity issue out of the same source as his other attitude issues. If so and he's now been humbled like you think... maybe he puts in the time to catch his head up with his arm.

OTOH, some guys just can't get the mental part. The game never really slows down for them.

The stats on INTs do seem concerning. His highlight film, on the other hand, is pretty amazing. Lot of deep passes thrown right on the money. He has an amazing arm.

I'm not a QB scout or anything close to it, so I have no claim to be able to evaluate him accurately, but those were the two things that stood out to me: he can make pretty amazing right-on-the-money deep passes and he throws a lot of INTs.

Had to get near to the end of the highlights to see what I needed to see. They focused on all the long throws for putting air under it to go with his roll out and scrambling. At SEC level the safeties will eat some of that up. At the end you could see a few pocket short to intermediate routes which looked well thrown with zip. Really natural passer with good feet and mobility. Get him in for a RS year to learn how to read D's and the scheme. He could do some damage IMO.

Just an observation but, looking at this kids follows on twitter. He follows Trump and I don't see that he follows anyone else political. Im just assuming that if he leans right politically. Berkeley could be a tough place to live for 3-4 years IMO.

Idk if you are into a bunch of nerds having battles Berkley would be cool. I remember seeing a guy in a baseball helmet and a painters mask bust a stick on someone's head and thought it was hilarious.

Probably cause he’s the president, I follow him but maybe the least likely republican you might see!

So we’d have a conservative Californian and a liberal Texan? :loco:

Team mates and especially under Jones' information control don't say bad things about team mates. But I doubt a lot of the players appreciated JG's tantrum or his reported sense of entitlement (did Jones promise he'd start?). He appears to lack the maturity to lead the team.

These are probably the reasons Jones couldn't start him in spite of wanting to badly.
I'm not sure Jones wanted to start him at all really. Jones just wanted to make sure he'd have both QBs around for the entire season. I think he was kind of thinking that over the course of the season one or the other would take the bull by the horns.

But Jones has always leaned towards the older QB over the younger guy in his time at UT. I'm not sure there's any evidence to suggest that Butch wanted to start JG that badly. He just wanted to make sure he had him around for the whole season.

well obviously i have no way to know for sure. i just find it hard to believe that both of these guys "are what they are" in the first year they saw live action.

both had multiple OC's, a new QB coach, new WR coach, new OL coach....

and neither you or i was all that confident that the offensive hires were "the answer" conisdering it was still CBJ's offense.

and here's they both come on their 3rd OC, with a whole new scheme to learn...so i don't know that we'll see immediate returns this season.

i do think the scheme change alone will help, especially if the offensive line can ever get any better, and you provide a qb with a more traditional, and a much more reliable, running game to lean on.

and a defense that doesn't require the offense to score 30+ a game to have a chance.

there was a lot with last year's team that required nearly every ? to get a postiive answer for it to be successful.

that didn't happen.

and i think maturity wise, JG did get humbled. he didn't set the world on fire, and he couldn't put the offense on his back.

time will tell. i hope i'm right too......:eek:lol:

On a side note....

Justin Wilcox has now had his QB plucked by us not once but TWICE.

Merry Christmas Justin!
