'18 CA QB JT Shrout (UT signee)

I actually do like JG's physical tools. He's not "slow". He's mobile.... just not a runner.

He has exceptional arm strength, a very good delivery, good accuracy, and has shown the ability to throw with touch.

Everything not to like is above the shoulders. He didn't show the ability to read D's pre or post snap. If his first or 2nd read wasn't there... he was going to be sacked. He showed a lot of indecision primarily because of his lack of pre-snap reads.

Team mates and especially under Jones' information control don't say bad things about team mates. But I doubt a lot of the players appreciated JG's tantrum or his reported sense of entitlement (did Jones promise he'd start?). He appears to lack the maturity to lead the team.

These are probably the reasons Jones couldn't start him in spite of wanting to badly.

The last 10 pages of this thread are garbage.

Shrout looks like an underrated guy. Many if not most coaches want to start "their guy" at QB as soon as possible after taking over a team. If he signs with UT, he'll have an equal shot at starting IMO. If you want to warm the seat... then you go with QD if healthy. If you want to play for the future now... you start the Fr if there's any way you can.

I Think JG still has a high ceiling that he’s yet to reach. Turns out he’s more pro style than dual threat, but I don’t think he’s slow I think he was just indecisive. When you’re unsure of if you should take off and run or not the you look slow because you’re hesitating. Also I think only a QB like Dobbs could’ve played behind last years offensive line.

Cal offering Wilson today makes you wonder if they know something about J.T. Shrout, who visited here last weekend and who's dad said they will make a decision this week between Cal and Tennessee.

I'm not going to pretend this guy is a can't miss prospect - his offer list does not inspire that much confidence - but stealing a QB from California, that is committed to Cal, is a pretty good sign of recruiting acumen.

Oh so they’re offering another QB? That’s a very good sign!

You can look at it 2 ways.

1. They think he's gone.
2. He looks at this offer and thinks damn they (CAL) told me I was their priority and flips because he feels slighted at the last minute.

Honestly, I can't say I love trading Penix for Shrout. However, I see the upside in this kid's film; he gives us another "unknown" like McBride was, and you can see his ability waiting to be honed and tapped into by an actual qualified coaching staff.

We will obviously still be hitting Top 2019 QB prospects hard, but in the event of injuries, at least this covers us 3-deep in scholarship QBs if Dormady transfers out.

i think a lot of the issues that plagued the QB's can be fixed. i don't think either benefited from an overly productive running game, and neither got what i would call "good" pass protection.

totally agree on JG's pre snap. he didn't see things coming at times, even when it was apparent. that can be taught. i think QD is better neck up, but sometimes still made some weird decisions. again, i think that can be taught.

i think what you're seeing, is a back up plan with Shrout. i think the plan has to be RS him just due to lack of experience, and development.

and if both qb's stay on the roster, another open competition.

as for JG's attitude, i think he got humbled on the field a little bit this past season. and i think both qb's benefit from the departure of CBJ and the land of open promises.

think its ab the potential and fit in Heltons system.

Agreed. With the exception of Dobbs, no one else who has thrown footballs at this university since Bray graduated has been very reliable, consistent, or shown they can lead us anywhere with W's.

So, I'm all for a new staff's evaluation, and Pac-12 country seems to be a bit more fertile grounds for QBs than the south sometimes.

The pick six was his fault the others you mentioned were not. If his WR actually runs the slant route it's not picked in the redzone. However the throw to Callaway could have been seen from space. He stared him down and all but yelled and put neon signs up stating where he was throwing. He did the same thing vs UGA. The UGA throw was when I truly realized our QBs weren't being developed at all. I saw signs but that was the biggest one.

Are you remembering the pick 6 vs Florida correctly? I don’t care if he stared him down for 10 minutes and told Florida’s DBs where he was throwing the ball.....he threw a ball that Callaway got BOTH hands on. It was high, already said that. But if a wr gets both hands on a ball, he oughtta catch it, right?

And I said nothing about the Georgia game, was only setting things straight about the Florida game.
