'18 CA QB JT Shrout (UT signee)

Vinny Testaverde threw more than this kid in a season once.

No one expects him to start next year. If he does, well, we're in deep trouble. But his film still shows a lot of upside and arm talent. It's worth a chance.

In the NFL, not high school. I like Shrout anyway, u can teach ball security, improve decisions and accuracy. U can't teach that arm, Shrout has

Low risk high reward type signing. Kid has a ton of potential, and his low ranking should allow us to sign a big time QB next year.

I know, I wasn't aiming for exact 1-to-1 comparisons with Vinny, just bantering about the amount of picks. But this kid has a very live arm and obviously had a rough OL blocking for him. He can be mentored and looks like a good fit for a more pro-style offense.

Gotcha and I agree. Love this kids upside

I think his ceiling is high. He has a great frame, 6-3, lean but with room to pack on 20-25 pounds with ease. Mechanics are flawless, his ball placement, release and follow through are are pure as you'll see. Arm is live, he's accurate and he's a decent athlete. Decision making, processing information with chaos going on around him, will be big for him moving forward. That's one of those things that can be hard to gauge in a HS QB, but is probably most important to their success- how smart are they, can you read a defense, pick up a complex playbook, etc. If he can master that part of the game, he has a chance to be a good one. If this an issue and he struggles to make quick, smart decisions with the ball, he wont see the field, simple as that.

I'm not going to pretend this guy is a can't miss prospect - his offer list does not inspire that much confidence - but stealing a QB from California, that is committed to Cal, is a pretty good sign of recruiting acumen.

And to think, we've done it to them twice this year. LOL

As far as the accuracy sure, but was his arm ever described as “live”? I honestly don’t remember.

Yeah this is from Hubbs in '15..

Oh, it isn’t just the strapping young quarterback’s arm-strength, either. In fact, Dormady unfurled a 55-yard run during scrimmage-work in practice within the past few days, noting that even some of his defensive teammates told him they thought they had the angle on Dormady but he outran them to score.

Looking back on it, definitely more of an indictment on our defense.

Did you write novels in a past life?

Asking for a friend.

If you're referring to me, then I would hafta answer with......strong possibility, ha. I keep so much weird info stored in my head, that when I start letting it rip, I can't manage to keep it to a 1 or 2 liner, ha. My "novels" aren't intentional. "Impulse typing" when I read something I wanna comment on. "Impulse typing", smh.

It wasn’t injuries that kept Shrout on the bench. Matt Moore’s lil brother was cemented as the starter and was one class ahead of him.

Ahhhh. I see. Appreciate the knowledge. Thought I read something, somewhere about an injury that kept him out a yr. His sample size worries me. Just because we don't get to see if his numbers get better, worse, or stay about the same. Cause just based off the 1 season.....25 INTs is alarming. I read that he decommited and is trending our way for an announcement on him coming to Tennessee to be our next hopeful in line. So hopefully it was a learning year for him, and the jump to college will improve his decision-making some. Throws a pretty ball.....but also makes some bonehead forced throws that would be costly too. Helton seems to be a pretty solid QB teacher throughout his career, so I'm confident that Helton will improve any QB he gets his hands on.

Sounds a lot like dormady

I was thinking the same thing. I was hyped when Dormady committed, after watching his highlights and going over his yearly stats. Dormady is a legit gunslinger. Needs better decision-making, just like Shrout does. Dormady is looking real good one game.....then looks like he ain't ready for the big stage other games. Something just isn't clicking with Dormady. I hate it too, because Dormady has the prototypical "gunslinger" traits and abilities. Maybe Helton will unlock the magic?!!! I dunno. Hopefully Helton can guide Shrout to become a stud gunslinger that is ready for the big stage in the SEC. Some QBs just don't posses that "it factor" to lead a big time program with big time pressure and noise. Hopefully Shrout is that guy. Personalities have alot to do with it too. This new staff is gonna be a whole different approach and style than before. Good things coming from the future QB spot tho.

Someone please educate me, why is our fan base excited about this kid? The fact that not a single significant university offered this kid should be a red flag. Top programs don't build teams with qbs ranked 683 in the nation.

Has a lot of potential

And that's why only mid sized d1 schools offered him? Between that and 25 interceptions, I just don't see it. There is a reason no relevant program offered this kid

Yeah, the reason is he broke his leg and sat most of his HS varsity career. There hasn't been enough exposure or experience to rank him any higher, but the fact that NFL scouts were raving about him at camp is enough for me. :hi:

Higher ceiling, better arm, better fit for the offense. Of course I’m probably sunshine pumping, but I am excited.

Of the three, I would want Martinez the most. I think Shrout might be the best fit, but we will have to see how he develops.
