I have known coach (Tyson) Helton for about two weeks now, Shrout told Volquest shortly after signing. I think the history that Tennessee football has intrigued me to the point that I wanted to go out there and check it out. Im not a typical California kid. I like to go hunting and fishing. The environment there and the school suited me, so I wanted to go see what it was about.
On short notice, Shrout spent last weekend in Knoxville and ironically it was his arrival to Rocky Top that left one of the biggest impressions. When I flew in, I put a tweet out about my location being in Knoxville and it took about 10 minutes to get off the plane. When I got off the plane there were some Tennessee fans that told me, 'Welcome to Rocky Top.' That was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced," Shrout offered.
"The fanbase that Tennessee has is absolutely amazing. Also, getting to meet coach Pruitt and the staff he has put together. I really loved everyone on the staff. I have built a good and quick relationship with them. The facilities arent comparable to other places in the country. I know I will have the resources I need.
Shrout obviously disappointed Cal head coach Justin Wilcox with his decommitment on Tuesday night, but said he wished nothing but the best for the Bears and wanted to handle the process the right now. While there was disappointment in Berkley, there was jubilation in Knoxville and Tuscaloosa this morning when Shrout delivered the news he would be wearing orange.
Coach Helton dropped the phone and started screaming running down the hall. He was really happy. Coach Pruitt was super happy as well. Cal has been very good to me. I have nothing but respect for Coach Wilcox. He has them turned around and in the right direction. I wish them nothing but the best. I wanted to do it the right way and Im real happy to be a Vol.
Shrout threw for 27 touchdowns and 25 interceptions as a senior at Santa Clarita High (Calif.) and in addition to the environment being more to his liking in Knoxville, he believes the Vols new offense fits him to a T. Coach Helton came over from USC and Tennessee is going to run something similar to what they run. I think I fit into that very well. I am really excited about what they have going for the future, Shrout offered. He will enroll in June.
